I've never hit either, I'm just a begginer but I had a 2 hour lesson (cost ALOT but was worth it!) a week ago and I've got a swing going now, touch wood ;) I bought a set of Mizuno MX900 graphite the other day cheap of the bay, £150 to be exact, and i;ve found I no longer have any real use for my Callaway ft 4 hybrid, as I hit the 4 iron in the mx900s straighter, easier and I find it much more rewarding when I strike it well. I know its going to be different for everyone, but just wondering what people here play, a 5 wood or 18 degree or so hybrid (or both!), and if possible why?

oh and I forgot to say, hi! just joined the forum a week or so. I'm a member at Royal St Davids, Harlech (north wales) I'm in my gap year before uni, trying to earn some cash! but I keep spending it on golf! I shoould really stop reading mags and this site, they just make me wanna spend more!

Hi Nick

Great course your a member of played there last year in a pro-am event lashing down and blowing a gale? welcome to the forum.

Never got on with hybrids as i hit my irons well but love my fairway woods.dont think for one minute that buying a bright new club will improve your game carry on with the lessons. And keep your old clubs you never know as you game improves you might find a use for them.

Hello Nick,

I have both in my bag. I dont carry a driver so I have the room for both. I dont use my five wood off the fairway much, just my utility however I do use both off the tee depending on how i'm hitting them and how far.

I also have both

5 wood...210-220yards
4i Hybrid...195-205 yards

I always hit the Hybrid sweeter and more predictable than than the 5W and so am tempted to replace it with another hybrid ( perhaps a 2 or 3 hybrind, I use Cleveland ). But there is something uber cool about hitting a nice fairway wood that I dont want to lose.

Hi Nick.

I use a 5 wood (19*) and a Callaway 20* (3i) Hybrid.

I make plenty of use of both. I think it depends on the difference in distance; for me it's quite a bit (15 yards) so I wouldn't want to be without. Quite why it's so much, I'm not sure.

PS....great course.....played there many moons ago, what a track!

I carry a 19* (3i) Hybrid to replace my three iron. I also carry a 16* (2i) hybrid, and not a 5w, as i have never been any good with fairway woods off the deck. I just find the hybrid easier to hit.

Harlech is a great track, played it last week with some mates from work. Gets a bit tricky in amoungst the hidden greens on the back nine.

If you are looking for a hybrid that is roughly a 5 woodit would have to be a 3h. now depending upon the manufacturer the loft for this could vary. I normally don't get on too well with hybrids prefering fairway woods 3 & 5. However I recently invested in a Ping G10 18 degree hybrid & I must say it works a treat for me, though for a coastal ttrack Id say stick with your irons, especially if the wind is like it was last week & use a steel headed fairway wood with a smallish head, you can do a lot with it, including punch it lowwhen needed.

Thanks for the replies! Yeah it is a great course, being a 28 handicapper it does punish me alot, but thats just pushing my will to get better! As it is quite windy down there the 5 wood looks like a better option as I tend to hit my 3 wood reaaaaly low but not a bad distance with lots of role. I'll look into them, I'm really liking the look of the new MD ones, that aren't realeased yet, what do you recommend?

The key is what works for you, there are some great hybrids ot there that work really well, the more |I use them the more I am favouring their use as opposed to long irons, but thats me, if you are happy with a traditional 5 wood then thats the way to go but it is worth trying stuff.

Welcome to the forum!!

I brought a MD EQL superstrong 5 wood with a grafalloy R shaft and it's awsome!!! I looked at cobra, callaway (as I have a X driver) and TM.

The MD just felt the best for me....obviously this is not the same for everyone.

Just giving you an opinion on the MD. More than likley going to get the 3 wood aswell!!!

Bear in mind if you are playing a course subject to a lot of wind that most hybrids are designed to get the ball up in the air. This may not be useful. Ditto with shallow face fairways.
A players hybrid, like the Titleist 585H may be a better option, although they aren't the easiest to hit for a high handicapper.

in my hrbrid the shaft fitted keeps the ball as high as a 3 iron i argued the toss with the guy saying i just wanted it to go that high it still stops pretty well though

As you can see from my bag, I don't have a 5 wood. My old Seal 7 wood goes further than any 5 wood I've ever had. So the 3 wood gets used from the tee and on really long fairway shots and the 7 gets the nod after that. My 24 degree rescue hits the ball really high and stops quite quickly which I like.

I don't think enough of us look at our lofts and distances to make sure we don't overlap clubs. No point in carrying 2 clubs that hit the ball more or less the same distance.
