Have a space in the bag between my 15.5 degree 3 wood and 4 iron (22 deg). Not sure what to go for. Think a 5 wood would be similar length to my 3 wood and I've been hit and miss with hybrids in the past. Tempted by a driving iron. Seen the mizuno JPX fli hi which is a 3 iron (19 deg) replacement with hybrid head and steel shaft. Thoughts welcomed!

Tough call it's pretty personal. I never got on with fairway woods, preferring hybrids. Recently picked up a 3 wood and now couldn't be without it. Also got a driving iron type thing (mizzy fli hi) which is more like a bulked up 4 iron and I love it off the tee and turf. What I would say is that a 21 degree hybrid in general goes further than a 21 degree iron, so rather than look at degrees try to figure out ur distance gap and get the club that does that, even if that's a 4 hybrid the same loft as ur iron

I have both clubs, JPX hi fli (about 3/4 years old) 5i and 4i replacements and Ive never really fallen in love with them, never seem to hit them well so have virtually stopped using them in most circumstances.
I also have a Callaway xhot2 5w and I love it! I can hit it sweet 95% of the time and it goes 200 yards on the dot. Flight is beautiful and so easy to nail. I'm considering the 3w version in ditching the driver if it goes 220/230 as easy as the 5w does.

A 5wood like you say will go as far as you 3 try an 18 degree driving iron or maybe a 20, the Adams pro dhy is a great club, TM UDI is also very good. Easy to get in the air and long.

I've got a 5 wood at 19 degrees and a 3h at 20 degrees. I don't carry a 3 wood but my driver loft is 11.5 degrees. I just couldn't get a 3 wood in the air high enough so went to the easier to hit 5 wood. I would say on a good hit I get about 190 mtrs from it and I'll get about 180mtrs from my 3h. Their carry by the way. I think the carry of my driver is about 235mtrs

Never really but a driving iron but a question I would ask is... Would you get the same level of flexibility with a driving iron as with a wood ie hybrid.

I love the hybrid,my 19degree 3 hybrid is my go to club so easy to hit, I struggle with the 3 wood off the deck sometimes so use this instead and im far more consistant with it.

Interestingly the young lad next door bought a hybrid 3 and was asking me about 5 woods to replace it. He is struggling with it, keeps hitting out the bottom of the face and going right. I suggested he move the ball about in his stance but his confidence is shot ... So 5 wood trials to begin.
I dropped the 3hybrid... It's a 2 iron in old money, no point really the 5 wood is versatile and comfortable.

think you should go and try before you buy but also take into consideration the conditions of the course- is it generally windy so you want to keep the shots with it low? or will you need less run or more run after the carry.

I had 3 hybrid which goes very high but my course can be very windy at times so is not always ideal when you want to keep the ball low

Definitely a course specific part of the bag for me.

In the summer I always swap in a 7 wood for our long par 3s because the greens are hard and I need the trajectory to hold them.

It's not just about filling distance gaps, it's about having a plan for the course in the conditions of the day.

yep i would agree about course specific and personal preference.

I have a 3 wood and an 18 deg hybrid which is my go to club, hit this far better than a 5 wood.

take few on the course and see how you get on would be my advice.

3 hybrid would be my choice - you need to try different brands to see what works for you. I was custom fit for 3/4 mizuno mp650 hybrids (had them 2 degrees flat), but found them unforgiving when I was playing badly. I've also tried the callaway X hot off the shelf and it was great but I recently picked up 3/4 SLDR hybrids cheap and find them very easy to hit, with additional distance

My immediate reaction was 3 hybrid, ideal from the light rough and off the tee on par 3's. I know the OP has said he has had issues but I'm sure these could be resolved easily enough and would definitely give him more options with the one club

I would go for the hybrid if for no other reaon than you need something for poor lies / juicy rough. I driving iron is fine off the tee or a tight fairway but not use from anywhere else.

If your in juicy rough you should be looking to wedge it back into play not go for the glory shot, anyhow driving iron hits it out of the light rough just as well as the hybrid ever did.
