Quite a few times I have been in games where no one had a watch to check time taken in searching.
So why don't electric trolley manufacturers fit a 5 minute push button timer.

They do on the Motocaddy M1

If some saddo pulled a watch out to time finding a ball I think I'd wet myself laughing.
Before today mate I would of agreed 100%, but playing today in a County Comp the 5 minute rule became an issue in our 3 Ball, asked about it in the rules thread.

I don't worry too much about the 5 minute timer because there is no way I am spending that long looking for a golf ball. My general rule of thumb is that if the clag is that bad I'll have a cursory look as I walk past and if I don't see it it can stay there and I'll play my provisional.

I do agree however that some folk have interesting interpretations of how long 5 minutes actually is and while there are many interesting rule interpretations, the 5 minute one is one that everyone knows and should be easy to regulate. Unfortunately, I think most people would take it rather badly if you started timing them.

What's the point in having a 5 minute rule if you're going to have a strop if someone looks at their watch?
Once it becomes clear that the ball is not going to easily found, yes I look at my watch. I don't think that makes me any more of a saddo than someone who suggests that three practice swings with sand in a bunker might not be a good idea

Yes, this is such a fundamental rule that I think it is surprising that almost nobody actually times it including people who would in other circumstances be absolutely scrupulous about a ball moving a fraction when a LI is moved for example (e.g. me!). I have also played with some folk who don't even seem to be aware there is any limit and just want to keep searching til they find it and only give up very reluctantly!

Would be interesting to do a little experiment (GM maybe?) to see how accurate people's perceptions of how long they have been looking for a ball actually are.

I've never played with anyone who's spent over, or even near 5 minutes looking for a ball.

If you don't find it in 30 seconds to a minute....then realistically you ain't finding it.
Not if you're looking in the wrong place, and if it's in a comp that matters to you, guy yesterday was only 6 over through 10 playing off 15, he rightly wanted his 5 minutes.

Just watch who you're calling a saddo! In a competition it's essential & I look at my watch the moment I start searching. There is normally one of two scenarios. 1. It's in deep rough, you're unlikely to find it, and even if you do you're likely to make a better score with the provisional. Under these circumstances I wouldn't look for 5 minutes, might not look at all. 2. The ball is in cut rough but nestling down so it can only be seen if you're right next to it. I'd spend the whole 5 minutes looking for one like this (having, of course, waved the following match through).

If anyone got a watch out in a friendly game I'd pee myself laughing.

In competition, though, using a watch is the only way to be sure of not breaking the Rules.

In my head I pictured a bloke pulling out a stopwatch and tapping his finger on the face 😂
