This Sunday we have our 5 club comp. as someone who would carry 20 clubs if I were allowed - I hate the format. I never have the right clubs, can't play half or quarter shots with a 5 iron and do not want to win it as everyone say your ok with 5 clubs but you're useless with a full set!

Anyone here like it?

Never played 5 but we have a 3 club over Christmas/New Year which is fun. What is always surprising is the good scores that still come in.

I always set-up with the par 3's in mind so I take 3w, 8i & putter but for a 5 club I think I would go with 3w, 5i, 8i, P/W, putter.

I think it makes you concentrate and manufacture shots with the irons and so I quite like the challenge.

I think its a good escape from regular full swing golf but you do have to think it through and plan the shots in advance

Don't take the clubs you want, take the clubs you'll need

Can be interesting.

First time I played to handicap when I went back to Scotland was a 3 Club and Putter comp.

Driver and putter essential (tried with Rescue once - no good). Par 3s determine the other long club(s) then something for bunkers/chips.

Does encourage some versatility,so take it as a challenge and enjoy.

Walking around the course is a challenge in itself, I don't need some dipstick arranging making it harder by only letting me play with a third of my clubs

I actually do not mind them as they are a bit of fun and a lot of people find htey play better. For something like this I would carry 2i, 5i, 8i, LW and putter. When I have played in them I have been suprised by how good some of the scores have been,

I've mentioned this before on a similar thread. Our seniors have an annual trophy which is played for with 4 clubs and a putter. The guy who won it last year scored 45 points. In the other 26 comps he played last year with a full set, his best scores were 36 points twice.

Played in ours about 5 weeks ago, took 3 Wood, 5 iron, 7iron, Gap Wedge, Putter. Scored 36 points and to be fair had plenty of chances for more points, I really enjoyed doing something a bit different

I'm going to throw all my clubs in the air like you do on a bounce game with the balls, and take the five clubs that fall in the nearest group. Well, I wont play any worse than I normally do by having a careful think and plot which clubs I shall need!
