Having just thrown 4 clubs plus putter in the bag in previous years, I have just gone through the scorecard, hole by hole, to work out tee-shots, 2nd shots, approaches, bunkers, etc.
Have decided on 3wood, 5 and 8 irons and 50deg GW.

These should (assuming swing holds up) cover every par 3, 3w should leave 5 or 8 iron approaches (with only a couple of manufactured shots needed), and two or three holes will see 2 x 5 irons reach the green. Bunker sand is pretty bad at our place at the moment so chipping out with GW will be fine.

Does anyone else plan this way?

Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

Good luck tomorrow :). I'm interested to know whether you actually score any better than normal. What do you normally carry?

Cheers, Tiger.

Usually carry 14 clubs! Hahaha! But in past 5 clubs, I've taken:
Driver, 4 iron, 7 iron and PW
3w, 5 iron, 9 iron and SW
20deg hybrid, 6 iron, 9 iron and SW.

As I said, never really planned it out before.

Possibly but there's also the confidence factor of hitting full shots rather than manufacturing shots...

but you're (he) is going to have to do that anyway with only 4 main clubs. Plus isnt that part of the fun?

Only played a couple of these, 3 clubs + putter and 4 + putter.

Never thought about it, always take driver and plan to hit it as far down the hole as I can and work it out from there!

Looks like s good selection to me and round our place I'd probably substitute the 3 wood for a 5 wood.

I stated golf with only a 7 Iron and putter playing par 3s of varying lengths. Improvising was the key and is something now I panic about without a full set in my bag.

In the same way that without my DMD device I feel all over the place playing approaches, despite playing without one until the past 3 years. Madness!!

Hope you do well tomorrow and let us know how you get on.

It depends a lot on how far you hit the ball.
I think you're right to choose clubs for the Par 3s yo start.
With 5 clubs you can afford a fairway wood/long hybrid.
Looks a reasonable selection..personally I'd go 5w, 6i, 9i, GW so fairly similar.
Go get 'em!

Cheers for the thoughts all.
Patricks148, only 2 clubs?? Holy moly! Not a challenge I'd relish!
Homer, approx distances: 3w is 215, 5i is 170, 8i is 140, GW is 100.
JonnyDee, I've charged the GPS device cos with only 4 clubs, I reckon distance is even more important to know.
Chrisd, I hate you sometimes! ;)
I'll let you all know how I get on.

there used to be a televised 1 club challenge usually after the Open- most took a 3 iron. Seve could do anything with a 3 iron. You should try it. Pull up the youtube vids then try it, makes the game fun and you learn a lot from it

I always plan for our 4 Club Challenge like this. I will take a 3 wood or 2 iron, then think of my second to all the par 4's to choose the best second club. One has to be a putter, so the third club is generally based on the par 3's.

Had some of my best scores in this format, rather strangely.
