42" driver on tour

Played with a 43" shaft for a few years now. Got fitted for me 917 with the standard 45" shaft and struggled with accuracy since. Just chucked a new shaft in and back at 43" now, lovely!

I got my XR set up with a 43.5" shaft and it's probably more reliable off the tee than my 3w; plus I only saw a drop of 1mph on swing speed but on average around 3-6 yards carry drop off which is negligible in a real gaming environment

I'm far from convinced that I would hit a 42" driver any further than a 43" 3 wood or be as accurate.
That's me though....
Current driver is 44 1/2" and certainly does find more fairways than 45/46" clubs.
But there's not a huge distance between my driver and 3 wood...

That's it,I'm ordering a new grip & getting the hacksaw out.
If it doesn't work out it'll give me an excuse to buy a new driver.

I chopped my previous shaft down an inch and really liked it. I found I middled it a lot more but the distance I was losing wasn't due to lack of speed.... I was spinning it far too much and that's why I've went back to a more conventional length.

If you read the story you'll hear he was mucking around a lot with lead tape and a swing weight machine.

Ive had cut down 3 wood and drivers. they didn't last too long in the bag.

That is not to say I won't find a shorter length wood that works in the future.

Chopped my driver to 44" and found it a lot easier to achieve the same sort of distances I was hitting it when at 45" and more often than not I actually hit it longer at 44" but the shorter shaft still didn't help with my accuracy issues so my driver finds itself left languishing in the back of the locker once again along side my 3-wood and a couple of sets of irons, several putters and another 3-wood, my old driver and.... you get the picture, I've been told on several occasions that my locker resembles a pro shop... :smirk:

Ps, If I remember rite I read somewhere that 'Bubba Watson' uses a 44" driver on tour and 'Tigger' uses a 42" on tour...

Moved from a Callaway XR to Cobra King F6 before Christmas and the stock shaft is at least an inch shorter. Hitting it straigher and consequently further in a straight line

I am going to try an experiment tonight at the range. Im going to take the shaft out of my 5 wood, and put it in my driver, to see what it does. Saves getting the hack saw out!

Not even remotely. I centre the ball a lot more so that more than likely makes up the small loss of clubhead speed.

Good to know. I chopped 1" off my 917 a couple of weeks ago and haven't had chance to try it out yet.
I'm used to a shorter driver and I just felt like I was loosing the 917 a little at the top of the backswing.
