Hey guys i am using a callaway steelhead plus 4 wood and now i am debating IF i should purchase a 3 wood and a 5 wood and what yardage can they give me compared to the 4 wood.

I used to carry a 4 wood, a callaway xhot pro, or a nike vrs, but I just was not happy with the yardage the control etc.. So I got the cleveland classic xl 5 wood, this offers me up better distance and more control. These are hot, you can play them off the fairway easily and off a tee easily. Seriously try one they just knock the ball miles!! Forget the 3 wood as well!!

As above its about loft really rather than the number. Whats more important to think about is the spacing at the top end of your bag. How many clubs can you afford to add (i.e out of the 14, I'm not inquiring about your financial situation!).

If you play a 3 iron and hit it say 180, then your 4 wood you hit 220, there's a big gap that needs filling. That 200 mark might be better serviced by a hybrid, and even that could be a 2, 3 or 4 hybrid that doesn't matter, what matters is the loft and how you hit it.

As an example I have a 4 iron 23 degrees loft I hit about 180 - 190.
Recently dropped the 20 degree 3 iron as I wasn't get much more out of that. Replaced with a 4 Hybrid (22 degrees) which I hit 200 -210.
Then my 4W goes 230-250 (on a good day!).

You have to have a putter and the irons at least 5 - 9 plus Pitching wedge. Thats 7 clubs. Its about how many clubs you can fit in at the top and bottom ends and have 14. Some have 4 wedges, some opt for more hybrids/woods. Adding a 3 or 5 wood to a 4 wood doesn't give you a huge variation really.

Hope that helps.

Really it's about distance...
Currently I have a driver, 17 degree 3w, 17.5 deg 5w and 21 deg 7w.
The 3w goes further than the 5w which goes further than the 7w
So although 3w and 5w are 0.5 degrees dufferent I get around 15-20 yards difference.
Many gaps between 3w and 5w are only 3 degrees - if the woods are the same model then I can't see 3 degrees making tht much difference in distance. 15-19 is a better spread but some will still hit the 5w a similar distance to the 3.

It all depends on how far......

Don't forget, its not just the loft that changes between 3, 4 & 5. Its the mass of the club head and the length of shaft. Although you may think only 1.5* between clubs is minimal, the distances between them also comes from shaft length and mass of clubhead.

If you know your distances, pick something to fill the biggest gap.

well hobbit i use the good old steehead plus woods they are very small.

I also use the cally steelhead 4+, brilliant club! I also have the TM stage 2 3 wood TP shaft and the head is huge compared to the Cally. The TM goes miles but the cally goes almost as far and I like the smaller head....
Sorry not much help but I was in the same boat as you and I still am:whistle:

I'd suggest sticking with the 4-wood

Excellent club and not really a compromise.Better off the deck. Often just as long.

I agree with this.

I would also add that I dropped the 3 and 5 wood in favor of a 4 wood as, well, being honest, I'm not consisten enough (... Yet) to get my Sunday best out of a 3 and 5 wood to notice a significant distance gap.

I have a 3 wood and 5 wood, not really noticing the difference in length between the 2 but the 5 wood is far more useful off differing lies and the tee so I tend to favour that
