does anyone on the forum currently use 4 wedges, ive been considering adding an extra wedge and taking out my 3iron.i currently use my pw which is 46 degrees i think, not totally sure what my sw loft is and lob wedge is 60 if the sw is set at say 54 would the 6 degrees make that much difference?also considering dropping the lob for a 58 degree which would possibly take the need for an extra wedge out of the equation.welcome all helpful ideas on this topic.ian mc

i would drop the 60 for a 58, but the bottom line is its what you feel more comfortable with. I have my normal wedge, a 52 and a 58 degree.

Too many wedges can cause confusion. I would also still drop your 3 iron and add a utility or high lofted fairway wood.

well i was thinking along the same lines ae you but when i bought my new irons they only gave you upto a PW which was 47 degree and a average SW is 56 degree and thought thats to much of a jump anyway so i will be using a SW with 52 degree and a 58 degree wedge. nicely spaced between the 3 of them which i think no need any any others.

I carry 4 wedges as I don't carry a 3 Iron. Would much rather have the options available to me at the 'Wedge' end of the bag.

Wilson PI5 PW - 47 degrees,
Wilson PI5 GW - 52 degrees, &
Vokey Spin Milled 56 & 60 degrees.

I think thecraw is along the right lines on this one. Too many wedges can be confusing for sure.

I use a PW from my iron set and 56* and 60* specialist wedges.

If you are taking out the 3 iron how about a 7W? Great out of fairway bukers and the rough. I know its a weird one but thought I would drop in a different alternative.

I used to carry 4, but found it confusing as I had too much choice. I now carry 3, and have learned to hit a bigger variety of shots with them.

The only reason why you would need 4, is if you adhere to Dave Pelzs' clock face system, but this seems very inflexible to me, and seems devoid of the 'feel' side of the game.

MWJ - Here's my entire bag. Hope it makes sense why I prefer options at the 'Wedge' end of the bag.

PING G5 Driver,
TM Burner 3 Wood,
Cleveland HI Bore 2 Iron Hybrid (prefer this to a 5w),
Wilson PI5 4-GW,
Vokey SM 56 & 60,
Odyssey DFX 2 Ball.

Can't see much wrong with that DHM, the only gap you have is between 2I and 4I.

It all depends on the individuals game and the course you play.

My bag is; TM Burner TP Driver, Cobra F-Speed LD 3,5 woods. Cobra Baffler DWS utilities 3,4. Cobra FP Irons 5-PW, Mizuno Raw Haze wedges 56* 60*, Odyssey White-Hot 2 Ball.

This works grand for me.

I carry 4 wedges. The gap in loft between the SW and PW in most sets seems to have increased to such an extent that a gap wedge has become more necessary

I vary whats in the bag depending on whether it's a links course or a parkland course. I have SWs with different bounce which get used on different courses. I have two 60° wedges again with different bounce for different courses. I find that using the ideal wedge for a particular course is better than having 4 wedges in the bag as I once did. On a links course, I can go a whole round and only use the PW three or four times as I play low runners in to a lot of greens. On my home course, a parkland layout, I play a lot more PW into greens.

horses for courses, or is that wedges for courses ?

I have 4 wedges, but tend to carry just 2.

48,52,56,60 degrees.

I don't have a set "plan" for when to carry certain ones and the "A" wedge comes out the least. However, there are one or two courses I play where the smart play on the short par 4s leaves 85-100 which for me is in-between.

I'm working on using my LW for 35/40/45 yard shots.....can't find anything (technique) for that distance other than the low-runner, which is a bit dodgy a.t.m.

I'm a 3 wedge type of guy. PW from my X20's a nice 56 degree SW and my lob wedge. I find I have more shots with 3 than 4 as I tend to get caught between two stools and end up not committing to the shot

I have PW and SW from my set and an old LW at around 60deg, don't think you need much more than that.

Interesting, (how many ways to skin a cat type debate!). Gotta agree about the gap between the standard PW and standard SW, I think my set is 8 deg or something, leaving a space for a nice little 52 deg wedge. However my reasons for getting a 52 would not be to particularly fill the gap, but to give me a better quality PW, therefore making the 'set' PW a bit redundant. But am I just being a bit picky, and what I really should be doing is practicing to be a bit more flamboyant with the 3 current wedges?

(You know what though, I think I would still talk myself to having the new wedge!)
