Given the strength of the European tour it seems to me that the present set up of 3 USA based majors + 1 in the UK, is somewhat unfair, I think that the USPGA should make way for a European based 4th major. Any suggestions as to which event could be used?

While I agree, I would rather see a major held in middle/far east, possibly Dubai.

It's a world wide game after all, why limit it to just the U.S and Eurpoe.

Cooden? :p

Wouldn't mind seeing another major seeing as golf is an all-year sport nowadays, the 'major season' could be longer, but then again the race to Dubai and the Fed-Ex cup seem to occupy end of year already. Could they sneak one in early? say... February/March?

I don't agree that it should make way at all. Its a much longer serving championship than the Masters so should remain. Any way why does anything need to make way, why not just create a 5th major to help modernise the game a bit and bring it upto date. I wouldn't have it in Europe either, better place would be in Australasia and move it between the countries in that region and could have it in September/October time.

Agree, would far prefer to see a major at one of the sand belt courses in Australia (Royal Melbournet etc) than one in Dubai.....

Hasn't one of the bigger ladies events been made into a 5th major this year (Evian?)?

think the calendar is already pretty crowded the best way would be one of the WGC events to be uprated? Finance is the biggest issue to creating one unless maybe the Shanghai event could be considered no doubt the chinese would love to get in on a big scale especially with olympic golf next time around.

It's fine as it is.

Agreed.

The one I'd drop in favour of one somewhere else would be the PGA Champs as it's essentially the PGA Tour's comp. But, to try and have a 'European / Asian / African / Champs' would start getting too messy. Leave it as it is.

With the increased prize money worldwide and ability to play against world class fields almost every week, personally don't think that major's have the same prestige as in years gone by - particularly the USPGA. Just my opinion though and the Masters and The Open are still pretty special.

I don't like the idea at all... it would make comparisons with other eras more difficult (just as it is hard to compare now to the us amateur/british amateur majors era) and make the concept of a grand slam less relevant (what if someone ONLY wins 4 of the 5 majors?).

I think that the chopping and changing of the women's majors is a mess. Apparently the LPGA only recognises Karrie Webb as having a career grand slam even though a few others have won 4 different majors.

Could always drop the Open as a Major to make way for another one, after all links golf is a bit mickey mouse

US PGA Championship is run by the PGA of America which is separate from the PGA Tour. You will notice watching it that a certain number of places are reserved for club professionals who can get in via the PGA National Championship which I think is a nice touch.

I understand it often boasts the best field of all the Majors as it's qualification criteria result in more of the top 100 on the World Golf Rankings getting invited compared to the other Majors.

The Players Championship, which already claims to be the unofficial 5th Major, is effectively the Championship for the PGA Tour. But there is the Tour Championship as well.

Just wondered by what process a Major would replaced or a new one added? The current 4 are considered Majors by vurtue of status, tradition and consensus. How would that work for a new one?

I think the US is the ideal place for major golf tournaments (apart from the idiot Americans shouting get in the hole when someone tees off a par 5). My opinion is based purely on TV times, late evenings is perfect for me. I wouldn't want to watch something in Dubai that finished mid-Sunday afternoon or even worse Australia!

I don't care where the tournaments are played as long as the golf is good and the US does have the best tv slot for me in the UK.
