My iron set is 5-sw. I saw the matching 4 iron on ebay (£15 with £15 delvery). Just after people's thoughts on how necessary a 4 iron is? I have played without it but it might give me a bit better distance. Is it any harder to hit than a 5 or 6 iron?

So many variables.
Some don't struggle with 5 iron but can't hit a 4
Some have no problems with a 4...
I don't use one as I'm not consistent enough with one and it tends to not go much further than my 5.
If I was able to use a 4 iron effectively then one would be in the bag.
Only you will know how well or otherwise you'll be able to use a 4 iron.

Got a 4i but don't use it as I use a 22* hybrid, have often thought about trying it out but as for if I'd put it in the bag instead, I very much doubt it as I'm not that consistent with longer irons...

My little 22 gives me about 170/180 but I've just aquired a new set of irons that hit longer than my previous set and the 7i gives me about 170 so gonna have to have a bit of a sort out/revamp of my bag...

The only thing is I find the 22 slightly easier/more consistent outta the rough but I may swap it out for my 18*...

Longer irons are not everyone's cuppa, very difficult to know what to do really...

If you have a good swing and finding middle of the club majority of the times then go for it it's only 30 pounds.
In my opinion majority of the handicap golfers struggle with the longer irons due to trying to hit it harder than for example 9 or 8 iron. I was one of those people, when you think that you want to hit the ball 180-200 yards it is in our head that you have to swing faster. It took me some time to realise how wrong I was and now my 4 iron is go to club of the tee in a windy days or shorter par 4.

4i per se is not necessary

better to look at it from a gapping perspective from what you have at the top of the bag say driver 3metal or 5metal
whatever that top end is
then look at the distance you can genuinely 'carry' a 5i to the next club up - what's that 'gap' to the next carry distance

then you would need something to fill that gap

whether or not that should be a 4i then would look at just how consistently you can hit your optimum 5i carry distance & how often you can hit the center (get a spray (foot spray/dry shampoo) to check contact location

other thing that's key with lower irons like 4i is to have it function correctly so not just carry the same distance as the 5i the swing speed you can comfortably produce will need to be reasonably high - with the lower loft of the 4i or lower irons you need club head speed to be able to achieve a good launch angle with a spin rate that will the send the ball up & keep it in the air long enough to get optimum distance

common for folks to find that there is not a bunch of difference in their true carry distance of the 5i 4i 3i they all go pretty much the same distance in the air - that's largely down to not having enough club head speed & also finding difficulty with center strike & presenting optimum (for those clubs) dynamic loft at impact

many folks with moderate swing speed capabilities would be better filling those gaps atop the bag with 4/5/7metals or hybrids or a mixture of the two

You are reaching the point where the club is reaching the harder to hit stage.
Depending on good an iron striker you are you may well find that there is no difference in distance with the 5 iron simply because you do not hit it well enough and must as importantly nowhere near as straight.

I have just reached the stage when the 5 iron has been replaced with a rescue simply because I no longer practice and just play.

I bought 716 AP1 5 ~ PW KBS shafts last year as I couldn't hit the 4i from my previous set, but we have have a number of short Par 4 where i play where positioning is the key so I bought a 4i with a stock graphite shaft. I have to say I prefer it to my 22 G30 hybrid from the fairway and off the tee, I just accept it tend to can it a little

Recently bought the 4-iron that goes with my iron set and love it. Strike it so much better than a hybrid. Now looking for a 3-iron.

It would be worth getting it to see how you get on with the 4-iron as it's not too expensive. Has it got a similar shaft in it though compared to the rest of your set?

My new AP2's were 5-p/w but I ordered the 4i just a week later and have now added it to my bag and find myself reaching for it quite a bit as it offers me more options, especially on 2 of our long par 3's at 190-200yds.

Would you guys who have 4 irons In the bag be happy carrying water at 190 and stopping it on a green?

I sure as hell wouldn't. I hit it too low and also I couldn't do it 8/10 times with an iron. I have much more of a chance with a hybrid.

you didn't kneed to, thats what you have a strong 3 iron and if you decided to get a 3 iron for your set as well, its 17 deg so stronger than my 2 iron;)

I'll settle with my 4 mate.
Dunno what it is about these clubs. Sole? Shaft? I have no problem at all with my 4 iron. As long as I keep it nice and low on the takeaway!!

I like having a 4 iron, but if i didn't play all my golf at links courses i would prob have a higher loft hybrid. personal preference plenty of guys i know carry a 4 hybrid
