I have a bit of a gap issue between my 4 iron and 5 wood.

What do you recommend to plug it? Or should I just practice more with the 4i?

Don't anybody suggest a 3 iron - it's not happening!

I absolutely love my 4 hybrid. Give the Callaway X Hot 4 Hybrid's a go, they're so good. Big fan of hybrids in general, and find them so much easier to hit than woods, so my bag goes Driver, 2 Hybrid, 4 hybrid, covers pretty much all bases for me.

Almost don't think about a 3h or 4h, think about the loft and how far you hit it.
Lofts on hybrids are getting stronger too...a 4h 4 years ago was 24°, now its nearer 22°. Ball speeds are faster due to hotter faces. I have a 22° hybrid between my 5w and 5 iron. It fits in fine distance wise.

it's obviously very personal - if you don't feel that you are hitting the 4i as well as your 5 then you may find a 4h works better for you. Your comment on the 3i suggests this might be the case.

Love my hybrids. Started hitting my 5 iron better recently but before that really considered sticking in a 26 degree mashie.

Why practice when you can buy a club :p

I'd suggest that you go for a 18/19* Hybrid - alone - as that's the standard 3 iron replacement. If you are hitting the 4 iron well, then that's a bonus, but you can also develop an 'easy swing' with a hybrid that could replace that too.

That said, if you have certain holes that virtually demand a specific club, then it can be worthwhile to get the specific club - as I did with a 4H some time ago.

I believe it's actually better to have more options at the other end of the bag though - as long as that doesn't make you feel you have too many!

Ether way, a 3H/18/19* should fit that gap!

I agree with Ian.

I've, in my limited experience of hybrids, always found they fly a lot longer than the equivalent iron.

Finding a club that fills the distance gap is where to look as opposed the number or loft stamped onto the club.

I'm not a lover of hybrids so my vote would go to working on the 4 iron :D

Practice is obviously the cheap and sensible answer. However, if you go down the buying route I'd recommend an adjustable hybrid, that way you can tinker with it on the range to find a distance that bridges the two clubs.

Truth is I'm working hard on my 5i/4i play and improving a lot but there's still a step between the 4i and 5w.

As always at this time of year, I have golf vouchers burning a hole in my pocket so there's not really a cost involved in experimenting with a hybrid! :D

Not sure what you mean by practicing your 4 iron. I assume you hit it well so not sure how practicing will fill the gap between a 4 iron and 5 wood. I assume you must have a good yardage difference, 25 yards ? Get 18 degree hybrid or whatever club fills the gap.

I go 5w, 4h, 5i and wish I could put another club in to make it 5w, 3h, 4i. So in your situation I'd get a 3 hybrid, although having said that my 4h is 24° and my 3h is 21° which is higher than other people have said above.

Using those lofts I find the hybrid carries about 5yds more than the equivalent iron.
When I use my 3h (I have one it's just not in the bag very often) it carries about 15yds less than my 5w.

I guess what I meant is that I hit the 5w beautifully and the 4i only "ok". My instinct is that I "could"/"should" hit it further than I do so could maybe close the gap a bit. But, yes, there's probably about 20-something yards more carry with the 5w.

What about a 7 wood ? Not sure on the lofts but if you hit the 5 wood well, a 7 wood might suit your eye more than a hybrid.

Beat me to it - 7 wood - perfect :-) I do carry a 24 hybrid though as hit my 7 wood further and don't carry a 4i. Plus it's useful out of the rough and I quite like chipping with it from greenside rough too.

Edit - I have the X2 Hot 4 and 7 woods which seems a good mix!

I love the X2 Hot fairways so would want to get that 7 if I went that way, but I've never actually seen one so good to know they exist!

Shame you don't live nearer and you could have a crack with mine :-) Launches lovely and high. Different cup to the 5 etc as would launch too high according to Callaway. Looks much the same at address though.
