We've got one of these coming up shortly for the first time in years. I know the choice can depend upon the course, but I'm thinking Driver, 6-iron, pitching wedge and putter.

Anyone had any success in one of these, and what did you use?

Unless you're a very sure driver, I'd change it for a 3 wood. You have to keep the ball in play as you haven't got a big choice of club to get out of trouble with

We do 3 club challenge at our place. I took Driver, 8 iron putter. Shot 3 over par. Its really fun and really does make you think.

We played ours off the red tees so I was thinking most holes would be driver and gap wedge and I'd rip it up if my driving was 'on'.

It wasn't a good driving day :o

It really depends on your course and your standard, but to me it would've been pointless swapping driver for 3 wood because there wasn't going to be any holes that I'd need more than a 5 iron for my 2nd shot, so an extra fairway club in the form of a 3 wood was pointless.

If I'd wanted to play safe off the tee I'd have taken 4i 7i GW. As it was I took driver 7i GW.

It's not my cup of tea. I've played 3 + putter before and can get close to my regular score (easier off 12 than 2, say!) but it's best just for fun, enjoy the company and hit some silly shots. 7 irons from 125 are kind of tricky. :D :D

I use(d) a 3 wood, 6 or 7 and PW, depending on tee.
We have lots of par 4s, they seem to work well either 2 x 3 woods (long ones) or 3 wood, PW (short ones).

Play our 5 club every year. Started off with a driver in the bag, but soon found out that was an error. You are taking a club that you will hit 13/14 times max......assuming no provisionals!

For the 5 club I take 5w, 6i, 8i, sw and putter, so for a 4 club I would drop the 6i.
Also, don't forget the par 3's on your course, so make sure you have a club to hit on those.

At my old club, we had 5 par 3s. Not one of them was the same iron. I was always surprised how many pars people made with the wrong iron for so many par 3s. Alternatively, making a 4 is so easy with the wrong club, it makes me wonder why people make so many 5s with the right one!! :)

(I include myself, b.t.w.)

The 17th was a basket-case hole. With a 4 iron, you'd either hit the green and make a 3 or stick it in the worlds worst bunker(s) or off the back or down the side, often to take 5.
With a 6 iron, it's easy. Lay-up a yard or two short, chip it on and one-putt. Simples.

Erm whats wrong with that ? Sounds like you've got all the drives taken care of without counting the par 3's. Seems to me that I use driver on most holes so why change. Should only leave a flick next shot so something like 7i and wedge should complete the set
