After work yesterday played at the local muni with 2 colleagues who haven't been playing long. For some reason I decided to take just 4 clubs, putter, 52 degree, 7 iron, 4 hybrid. After 5 holes was just 2 over, finished 9 over for 9 holes, 2 under handicap. Any theories on this? Was it not having to think about club selection? Only had to consider whether it was a full shot, or easy / hard swing. Probably get some odd comments turning up for a competition with 4 sticks eh?

That was a good score. Can't think of a reason for such a good score but playing with a half set or less is a good way to extend your game by being forced to hit 50%, 75% shots etc instead of just picking out the right club and just trying to hit it 95/100%

not if its a 3 club + putter competition which we sometimes have at my course.

Seems strange, I should think it is because you chose 4 clubs that you are most confident with / hit the best so you rarely hit a bad shot.

after the mess my driver was getting me in today (when it was good . . .) I've decided to try going round leaving different clubs out. I don't really have an alternative off the tee (except for par 3's and at my mates course all the par 3's are a good bit longer than at mine so I had trouble with them). I have nothing to rely on if I need to lay up.

Was really miffed with GM about that article.

I felt that they should have used 3 plus putter which is a well known format for competition, also they chose a proper long course to play at. I really think it skewed the result.

When we have the 3 club (+ putter) at ours it is generally won with 39/40 points by a higher handicapper, but it is played at the end of winter off the winter tees.

I think it is a brilliant format,it makes you hit different shots and the club selection process is fun.
