34 points in ex hurricane Gonzalo!

I was very impressed that a member of our Tuesday group managed to score 34 points in the gale force winds that were the remains of Hurricane Gonzalo this morning. I should point out that our course is particularly exposed, being on the side of a hill facing into the prevailing wind. I found it difficult to stand up on occasions, my bag and trolley kept being blown over, and one of my companions had his rather expensive golf umbrella totally wrecked by a particularly vicious gust on the 2nd hole. Most other scores, including mine, were less than 30. How did you get on if you played today?

if it was anything like it is here today, you would have been mad to play in that. Its not stopped raining since last night and the wind has blown every apple off the tree's in the Orchard. Ive had to spend the last hour picking them up for cider making

Wasn't quite that bad down here. Most of the rain had gone through, but we were hit by a particularly vicious rain squall on the 2nd hole, hence my friends destroyed umbrella!

Was going to hit some balls today. Parked it that idea as there's no merit to be gained hitting into that wind. Try again tomorrow

just back from playing a knockout match in what was a 4 or 5 club wind at times. Was perfectly playable except for a few exposed holes where the cross winds were just unreal. One of the most enjoyable games Ive had in a long time and really had to work hard to keep the ball under control, against a very canny opponent I managed to win on 17

Truthfully - played 18 and wanted to quit after about 6! Never really felt like that before on the course but such hard work and found it tough going just staying upright never mind hitting a golf ball. Lower back started to really complain - as did I inwardly!!

Despite conditons I actually hit it quite well despite making things more difficult when my brother suggested on the 1st that I play off the yellows - not the best idea in such weather and retreated (or advanced!) to the reds after 14 holes!

Off to sunny Spain tomorrow and forecast is for 28 degrees, light winds and no rain - GET IN :thup:

Couldn't agree any more with this, we had a 4 ball match play game for a bit of fun today in what was 40-50mph gusts on the Surrey downs. It was about as much fun as you could have on a course,

You have a funny idea of what is 'fun'. I would have walked off after two holes if I hadn't been playing for a trophy. My score was 24 points, with one birdie and four blobs, and I wasn't hitting the ball too badly!

To me it's different golf, trying to fizz 4i's in from 150 yards is a prime example, every shot was totally unique to today ..... Great fun.

Yep - its always just a different challenge when playing in the wind - can hit wedges 170 and rescuse 120

Exactly. My partner off 5 hits a pretty decent ball, on our 480 yard par 4 8th instead of his usual driver 4/5i, he hit driver/driver/7i lol

Why would anyone think it was a good idea to use an umbrella in those winds?

Because it quite suddenly started chucking it down in about a steady 30 mph wind (OK for a gust buster type umbrella). A few seconds later we were hit by a squall line with about about a 60 mph wind. My bag and trolley blew over, both my companions' bags and trolleys were blown over and the umbrella was blown inside out and completely wrecked.

great to be taken out of the comfort zone some times, at 14 i hit knock down 6 iron from 225 and missed long, at 16 i hit 4 iron from 160ish and missed way short, funniest bit is the hardest bit all day was putting!

Tell me about it, manufacturing the shot was the easy bit, puts that you thought wouldn't get touched by the wind did, and ones that should never. All in all great fun, and the wind really dried the surface of the course from recent rain
