I apologise now for bringing this up again, as I know we have had countless threads before. I am in the market for a new 3W, and because I don't always see 'eye to eye' with my 3W's, I thought I would look to the cheaper end of the market as it may quickly end up in the naughty cupboard. The Benross Rip and Hot Speeds have had some good write-ups, and the originals are now going for £60. Anyone got one or tested one?

I know a Pro who has one and likes it - but he can hit pretty much anything, as long as it has a Regular shaft!

You could also go the Ebay route with older classics, such as Sonartecs, Hawkeyes, R580s etc. Any that don't work out simply go back on, so relatively cheap investigation.

But it's worth checking out which style you (didn't) get on - Shallow Faced or Deep Faced. That can make the difference between being great and ending up in the naughty cupboard. Also figure out where you are most likely to use them - off tee or deck. Adams had a series some time ago that went 8020 7030 6040... through to 2080 according to tee vs fairway use, with face being deep to shallow - 2080 was like old Tight Lies.

Try a 4 wood. A bit more loft will make it easier to hit and you will get just as much distance.
Ive just done this. My 4 wood is easier to hit more often and there is little or no difference between my old vrs 3 wood and my callaway 4 wood.

I dont get this advice about a 4 wood, the shaft length of a 4 wood is the same as a 3 wood, if you struggle with the 3 then a 4 wont help, unless you are having trouble with loft but the strike is clean go with the 3.

A 4 wood is often a bit shorter, but loft is generally a problem, and a couple of degrees extra (loft up?) seems to make a pretty good difference at little or no cost in distance.

I'd go for a 5 wood, I hit mine pretty much as far as my 3 wood so much so that I don't bother with my 3 wood anymore and you can hit it off any lie within reason

I can recommend the R580, sooooo easy to hit very very forgiving and there Titanium so they sound good and are quite long

You can pick them up for peanuts! My 5 wood was a tenner and my 3 wood was £30!

He has not stated if its for off the tee or the fairway?
The callaway x hot fairways are pretty explosive, the cleveland classic xl 5 wood is very long the nike vrs isn't bad either.

I don't really get the deep face stuff for going off the tee only either just tee it lower on a shallow face.

I use a strong 3 wood, it may replace my driver, I actually don't feel I need to play it from the fairway the 5 wood is good enough for that.

modern 4 woods tend to have the same shaft lengths as 3 woods thats my point, check out the specs on the G25 and Jetspeed for instance

True for those two makes but not for Titleist or Callaway.

I got both my 3 and 5 R580 off ebay and am really happy with them, as you say, the 5 wood is the go to club off the fairway in most any lie!

But many other brands maintain a differential. Strong 3 and 3 often have the same length, for sure.

That extra couple of degrees of loft helps too, though.

Another vote for just ditch it. I haven't carried a 3 wood for 20 years. Biggest waste of space in the bag going. Get a driver you can hit consistently and a decent option off the tee for safety.....for me that's a big cavity back 3 iron but could be a strong rescue or 5 wood. Then get 4 wedges in the bag and start scoring!
