Random question but I'm going to look in my pro shop at 2nd hand clubs later with the aim to fill a gap in my setup. I've got gaps at the top end and the bottom end. Would I be better getting a 3 wood or a 50 degree given my current setup?

N.B. This is purely based on opinion. I am likely to buy the shinier club if both are available ;)

distance gap between Driver and Hybrid? then do you feel you have a true gap at the wedge end? what loft is the PW? 45 ish? How is your scoring sub 100 yards?

How long is your course, do you need a 3 wood really or are you just looking to buy something?! (i love that feeling!) how many times a round do you need a 220 yard (ish) shot from the fairway? or really tight driving holes?

Just because you can carry 14 clubs, doesnt mean you have to!!

Forget this notion of using 3 woods only on really tight holes.

Its doesn't need to be tight. Any hole that doesn't need a full driver to reach in two in 3 wood country. Even with wide open holes you are still likely to find rough hitting driver over a 3 wood all the time.

Having a 3 wood is a nice option on off days with the driver. These happen.

Distance gap between driver and hybrid isn't massive, but that's because I am still trying to get comfortable with the driver. 3H is carrying 150-160yds at the moment, so something that I can hit off the deck that will carry further is very tempting.
PW is 45 degrees. Scoring sub 100 is pretty atrocious. Putting is ok - average just over 2 putts. Chipping/Pitching is an area that needs work.
I don't currently have a course - can't justify the membership fees at the moment. But I'm aiming to play a few rounds at Heysham which is my nearest club this year. 6090 yards off the tees I'll be using.

I'm inclined to agree with rooter. Iv brought a 3 wood I thought I needed desperately. The amount of times iv used it on my home course is very minimal. It's too long for the hole I brought it for off the tee. So had to go out and buy a 3 hybrid to cover the distance between my 4 iron and 3 wood. Don't get me wrong I love both clubs, but nothing worse than knowing you've piled x amount of money into something you barely use! Let the club you will use most take priority imo

If you can hit the 3wood, I'd guess that would help you more at the moment. But I find hitting a 3wood off the deck rather challenging (I have a 5wood in my bag myself and even that I find sometimes difficult to get airborne, especially at the moment with the fairways being in suboptimal condition to put it mildly). I don't have a gap wedge and never missed it, I find it relatively easy to just take something off my PW or even 9iron when hitting a shorter approach (but then, a full PW is only about 60 yards for me ... my shortgame pretty much starts with my 6iron ;) )

I wouldn't bother with a 3 wood tbh very hard club to hit off the deck for us mere mortals but tempting as well, that's why I carry a 5 wood, goes just as far, I'd plump for a GW at around 50 degrees (or a niblick there epic)

Buy another putter......one for long putts and one for tap ins
