Hi all.

Simple one this. 3 wood or 4 wood?

I currently carry a 17deg Titleist 980f fairway wood.

My driver (Titleist 910d2) is on a D1 setting (8.25deg w/standard lie).

Daft as it sounds but I have always struggled using a 3 wood (More mental than anything else) but I think there is too much of a gap between lofts.

I have a 3HL which is 17* loft. It it as far as I ever hit a 'normal' 3 wood with 15*ish loft but find it a bit easier to use. Might be worth getting hold of some for a hit-wouldn't worry too much about loft if the distance and control are right!

I went with a 4+ wood:thup: remember loft is your friend and my Callaway steelhead 4+ is easily as far if not further than my TM RBZ stage 2 3 wood with big head and tour shaft!

I've used a 4w in the past but it has been replaced with a more recent 5w. Not a lot of difference, the 5w is only 1deg more loft than the 4w had. I also carry a 7w which is the same loft as a 5w I used fifteen years ago.

Don't get caught up in the club number, check the loft options and choose what suits your course best :)

12 months ago I changed from an old Titleist 15° 3 wood to the 913 with 17° loft (that'll be a 4 wood then) which is loads easier to hit for someone with a naturally low flight like me. Tee it low and it can be shaped pretty easily - more options from the fairway too. Picked up 5-10 yds only when I changed but the confidence increase was worth the price alone.

Depends on what your main use will be as I see it, Titleist woods not the best off the tee unless it's the FD model and offerings from other manufacturers are really very good.

I swapped from a 3W to a 4W and I'm really glad I did. Much easier off the deck and that, coupled with better accuracy (in my experience), has helped out no end, particularly on par 5s. For me it is worth the loss in distance for the increased accuracy and ease of use.

I've used a 4 wood for years.
Have dabbled with the 3w/5w setup on occasions but always seem to come back to a 17° loft.
3 wood length shaft, a couple of degrees more loft-easy!
And I bet most people would hit a 4w as far or further than a 3w.....
Got my BB set on +2° to make it a 17..love it.

I'm just dropping a 4w from my bag since getting my TM 12* fitted SLDR, I have a strong 13* 3w and a 7w so the 4w has become redundant, drop me a pm if your interested in it.

At the start of the season I visited my local driving range and wanted to look at my club gapping at the top end of the bag. Had always struggled to hit a 3 wood off the deck and having seen the figures on flightscope, it was clear that some of the clubs I carried had the same amount of carry/distance.

As a result have now replaced with a Ping G25 4 wood. I can use this off the tee when required but I have also found it easier to hit from the fairway.

Not daft to me. I have the same problem. Got an adjustable Cobra Amp fairway which can be set to a strong 3W or a weaker 4W. Still can't hit it but I know that technique and a lot of negative thoughts with it in my hands are primarily to blame.

I have a 4 wood. Callaway RAZR 4 wood along with the driver of the same family.

When I was testing them I found that I hit the 4 wood as well if not better than the 3 wood so the demo guy suggested I go with that, which I did. Havent looked back. That was 2 years ago.

I'm just curious why you have a driver set at 8.5*? But like you I find a 3w hard to hit and I'm a Cat 1 player for past 20 so yrs, don't know why I can't!!! I have an 11* driver and 18* FW wood. I wouldn't worry about the gaping tbh just use what feels good for you.

I have a 3WHL - cracking club , couldn't hit a 3W very well at all

Now also have a 14 Degree Driver - the more loft the better it appears for me

in a world in which there were relatively defined 3 and 4 woods, no hybrids/rescues/mini HL/tour heads etc etc there might have been some merit in the question/debate

I've got a 910F 4 wood with 17° of loft.

That said, I've currently got it set to 18.5° for the last course I played.

After how it performed I might keep it set to that

So, I have a 4 wood that is currently masquerading as a 5 wood
