I'm tempted to buy a 3 iron, I like my 4 iron and my hybrid is so offset it's a bit of a gamble what direction the balls goes off at.

The question is, do I buy a traditional 3 iron (of which my Callaway irons do not go down to, so would not match the rest of my irons) or a utility club which is a bit like an iron and a bit like a hybrid?

Any experience with either?

A driving iron would be my suggestion, you can get a Callaway Apex 21° that should gap for yourself nicely with that, trying out different driving irons/utilities would be worth a shout also

i would check your Iron lofts, just in case your irons have jacked lofts. don't want to be buying a 21 deg three iron, if your 4 iron is the same or even stronger

I have the adams driving iron, great for off the tee. Don't like it off the deck though. Would prefer a hybrid for that. If buying again I'd get one that looked more like an iron and wasn't as chunky.

Just made a new 3i for myself, to replace a 3hybrid. So far it's gone 253, 240,226,220, I just hit irons better then my hybrid and I'm more accurate with them. I'm ditching my 58 wedge to put 3i in.

Is it for fairways or off the tee..? If just off the tees I'd definitely go with the 3 iron.

I have a 2 iron just for that

I've got a 2 and 3 iron mizuno mph5, both excellent clubs with a powerful low flight, I do also have 3 and 4 hybrids and tend to rotate between the 4 of them depending on course setup, weather and how I'm playing,.

I def think having 1 of both is essential especially if you play on windy courses

Whatever you feel more comfortable with? No point in asking strangers what clubs you should buy, you know your game best. Your regular playing partners will have a better idea than formers who have never seen you hit a ball. Personally I play a 3 iron as I feeling more versatile for me and I can hit a bigger variety of shots with it, itseasy to hit high and low. Utility clubs aren't as workable but are possibly more forgiving but if you play a 3 iron forgiveness shouldn't really be a concern. Play the club that allows you to hit target the highest percentage of the time, if your not a great ballstriker you're probably better with a rescue club don't let your ego get in the way as many players do.

I'm thinking of getting a ping crossover a bit of a half way point between the 2

You and me both. My hybrid and I are having artistic differences and I need something between my 5 wood (too long for most of the longer par 3's at my place) and my 4 iron. Hit it well last year when I tried one. Need to try it again I think. The only down side is my wish list for 2017, considering I'm not suppose to be buying is getting longer and longer

If you want an iron I have an Apex Pro 3 iron sitting doing nowt.

I think it's about options really.

My Mizuno MP5 4 iron is a club I can hit low with a punch and is good into the wind. My Titleist hybrid is a higher flight but longer, great off the tee and easier out the rough.

The combination works for me as I wouldn't fancy hitting my 3 iron out of the semi or my hybrid into the wind!

I'm old enough to remember when "good" players always carried a Ping 1 iron. (Prompt the Lee Trevino joke!)

The pros carry hybrids because they work and mix and match each week depending on circumstances. Think carefully before dumping it for aclub that's normally harder to hit.

I have both and switch between them depending on the course I'm playing, and just how I feel at the time. The hybrid is in at the moment but the 3 iron will no doubt take over at some point.

I have a 3 iron as I am useless with a hybrid don't know why I just hit irons better.
So go for what you hit best try some demos.
