I just put my name down for our next comp in two weeks time.
It's a "3 clubs" comp.
Anyone ever played it?
What two clubs would you choose along with your putter?
I'm thinking 5 and 9.
(5's my lowest iron)

depends on the rules and the course

ours is 3 clubs + putter and I use 3 wood, 6 iron, 9 iron every time; but the course is nearly 7000 yds and the competition played in Autumn !

it's really down to you and your course - for example if you have 4 par 3's that you normally hit a 5 iron on it makes a lot of sense to have a 4 or 5 iron as one of your clubs unless there are even more compelling issues!

on the other hand you can generally do most things with a 9 iron, to some degree, that you can do with more lofted clubs (certainly with a little practice)

I'd consider a hybrid or 3 wood instead of the putter. Then 7 iron and 54 degree.

Hmm, you just reminded me of a time when my putter broke and I used my driver instead (like a belly putter).
I'll have a practice putting with my 3 wood or hybrid maybe.

It's definitely 3 only.

I would take a putter, five iron then either my pitching or 56 wedge. more likely for me my 56 as this covers me for most shots inside 80 yards without compromising too much.

take a putter. there will be a few clever ones who try to putt with a wedge but they'll be the ones afterwards moaning about missing a truckload from 2-5 feet. If you putt well you'll pick up at least half a dozen or more shots on these guys as they'll have a few three putts and probably one or two four putts.

Work the other two clubs out based roughly on the par 3s. Perhaps a 4 iron/hybrid for longer shots and an 8 or a 9 for shorter.

Remember length isn't everything in these comps - the important thing is to plot your way round carefully to avoid trouble. Try and play your tee shots so as to allow a comfortable shot to the green. Generally you have much more margin of error playing to the fairway than you do playing to the green, so you should be trying to leave as comfortable approach shots as possible with the clubs you have, even if that means you leave yourself further away than you have to.

Almost certainly have to include a putter imo. The number of 3-5 footers that you'll miss with an alternative demand you use a proper putter.

Then consider what you can get away with for the Par 3s. If a single club can get all of them on front or back edge, then that's the one to go for - 5 of 6 iron:.

Driver would still be my other choice, as I'm straight, but a 3-wood or hybrid could be better if more reliable.

Then stay out of the bunkers and deep rough!

Have fun!

Definitely my putter, and my 52 Cleveland is so versatile I'd be stupid not to take it. Not sure on the 3rd club but it's between my 3h which is my most forgiving wood or my 8 iron which is my 'go to' club when the chips are down.

Probebly played in our 3 club comp. ten times winning three,I used 3 wood 8 iron and putter, tried using 3wood once for putting but missed too many so I would recommend to use your putter. When you think bunkers might come into play think about your shot before playing. Good luck.

I haven't checked but I'm assuming yellow tees as its a "novelty" event.
We have
5xP3 between 126y and 177y
4xP5 between 456y and 497y
and P4's from 273y to 420y
As I say, never played this game before but I'm already thinking it's the P3's and putts that will be the clinchers.

I would go 5 Iron, Putter and then look at the par 3's and choose a club that would get me on the green for 3 of them. I find that 3 of the 4 par 3's on alot of standard courses are of similar length (150 - 165 yards with one being 180+) so pick the lofted club that will hit the longer of these and use this as your lofted club.

If you decide to use a wood/hybrid for one of your clubs you will have to play some shots that will require you to take a bit of the distance you would normally hit, take it back in your stance and try to play a low running shot, must say I like this comp. as it gives you a chance to play shots you wouldn't normally play, can be usefull especially if you play a links course.

The first time I won I think my score was 96 playing of 24 at the time, not a vast differance to my normall scores at the time.

You really need to consider the layout of the course before deciding. No good taking a 5i as your longest club if the course has 200 yard carries to reach the fairways. Or an 8i if every green is protected by 10ft deep bunkers.

Using a hybrid or 3w instead of a putter is a good option, then a mid iron and maybe a pitching or gap wedge.
