Morning all.

I've entered into our clubs annual "3 club challenge" on the 29th of this month.

Basically you pick 3 clubs and play 18 holes with those 3 clubs ONLY. Lowest nett score wins.

I'll be taking my 5 wood, 8 iron and a putter.

What would you take to get round your course?

4 iron, 7 iron and putter.

Did jack nicklaus once go round st andrews in level par with a 7 iron only. Sure i heard that somewhere!!

Should be a laugh that comp though

I have enough trouble working out what to take for a 5 club challenge never mind a 3 club.

Sounds like alot fun. However i'd probably ruin my swing manufacturing shots the whole way round!

Would need be either my 3 wood or 18° hybrid (depending on which im hitting straighter that week),7 iron and putter. I get the logic behing putting with the wood but i can rely on my putting saving me 3 or 4 strokes a round so wouldn't want to give that up.

This is my reasoning too. Good idea though putting with a wood to get an extra club in.

Maybe next year I'll give that a bash

I have won two of these comp. in the last 5 years, the clubs I used were 3 wood 8i and putter.I tried one year to use my 3 wood for putting and this wasant a succes, imo the putter is the club you use the most so makes sense to use it. :D

Good luck

hmmm that is tough! the putter/no putter debate is interesting... would have to go to the practice green and see if I could putt with my hybrid. if it goes bad on the day I could always resort to blading my wedge so my final 3 would be my:

3 Hybrid
7 iron
50 deg Gap Wedge

I dont know how all you jokers can get around the course without a wedge.. especially the guy who has won a few of them!!

52 deg wedge
56 deg wedge
60 deg wedge (for putting)

After Sunday you'd be as well putting with your 60 degree from now on.

By the way which year did Texan Bars cease to be in circulation :D

Yeah I know: my failing to get within 30 ft of the hole from 45 ft away at the 7th was probably the "circus golf" highlight of the day. I just took too much turf with the ball - apparently that's not supposed to happen with a putter.

Oooh, I'm not sure. 1980s sometime ? Probably early to mid 80s so I'll say 1984 without recourse to web-based "factual" sources like Wikipedia.

Do I win £5 ?

I always take a putter as puts take up a lot of your shots in any given round and will be more accurate than the edge of a wedge etc.

My last 3-club challenge I took a 6 iron, SW and Putter. Don't need anything longer than that as even on a 600 yard par 5, you can get there with four 6-irons. Sand wedge will get you out of bunkers etc safely and you can play well around the green with a 6 iron and sand wedge. Then you have the benefit of having a putter when you're on the green.

Ended up playing better than handicap, probably because I had no driver or fairway woods!!
