Afternoon

Im coming back to the game after a 10 year lay off.

Ive joined the local course and have been back playing for a couple of weeks.

Because I have been away for so long I need to put in 3 cards for my handicap.

I did my 1st card last week which was a 72 gross.
I played off SCR previously so im expecting a cat 1 H/Cap.

Im getting conflicting answers from all manner of people and my club are trying to find out (unsuccessfully so far) whether you can put in your 3 cards under winter rules.

The course is playing about 200yds shorter due to some astroturf winter tees, we are on full greens.

Question is

With an expected cat 1 Handicap do I have to wait till Spring to play the full course to put my 3 cards in ?

Im hoping Not..

Providing everything else is as normal, in the event of the course being reduced in length by 100 to 300 yards, the CONGU rules allow for qualifiers to be run with the SSS reduced by 1 stroke.

Thats what I thought as well.

Thank You

Anyone else confirm this ?

Refer your club to clause 13 of the CONGU manual.

~3.1 When, to allow for the use of temporary, or alternative, tees and not more than two temporary
greens:
- the length of a course has been reduced or increased by not more than 100yards (91 metres)
from the length of the
Measured Course, the Standard Scratch Score remains unaltered.
- to allow work to proceed on course alterations it may be necessary to reduceor increase the
playing length of the
Measured Course by between 100 and 300 yards (91 and 274 metres). In
these circumstances, the club must reduce or increase as the case may be the
Standard Scratch
Score
of the Measured Course temporarily by one stroke and report to the Union, or Area
Authority
if so delegated, such alteration and appropriate reasons. Theclub must also notify
the
UnionorAreaAuthority when the course has been restored to its measured length and the
official
Standard Scratch Score re-instated.

Well that clears that up.
Dont you just love golf rules speak :D

So that means yes but SSS will be reduced accordingly ?

Don't they have to take your prev handicap into consideration?

or is that out the window after X amount of years?

Someone at my club who was off scratch, gave up for 4 years to play in a band, came back and they gave him the same handicap again... a different situation to you i know.

Yes they have said that even after that period of time my previous handicap will be part of the equation.

I want to try and get into the county championship if my handicap gets me in.
The closing date is early though so im keen to get a handicap as soon as possible.

Also want to just start playing in some comps and start getting to know some members.

where in the country are you?

I suppose if you get the same handicap again you may be able to play in the scratch team if they have one.

Difference is I now have a young family so team matches will probably be a problem time wise if selected.

Played Nairn in 94 British Amatuer, What a great course but a bloody long drive from Lancashire.

LOl, some joker on here called smiffy who's off 13 reckons he could tear Nairn apart, just because he played it off the ladies tee's in winter;)

Don't you need to get county authority to have a HC below 6 unless previously a pro ?
