Where do you guys use your 3 wood? I have never been confident off the deck with it nor a 5 wood really, must be my shortness! Anyhow they then turn Into a 1 trick pony for tee shots.I was thinking of popping in a 16 degree iron in this slot for tight tee shots, fine hitting my rescue but think this may keep it under the wind.
At 200 yards out I doubt I would find the green anyway,so 180 yards and a chip is fine by me.
I would love for GM to do a feature on this as I genuinely do not know what works for me below the 5i!

At this time of year its only on the long par threes (into the wind) and for position on the 4th. I don't tend to use it off the deck. There isn't any percentage. If I need it to hit a par four then chances are I have a shot and a lay up to 80-100 yards is a better play. I will use a five wood if necessary.

In the summer both the three and five wood get far more use for position and to avoid dangers the driver can get me in with the run. I would decide does your course warrants the use of fairway woods or not

I use my 3 wood off the tee and on the fairway for any shots that require me to hit 210-220, less into the wind. I don't carry a 5 wood any more and use a 19 degree hybrid which goes the same distance but gives me more control.

Personally I found that it was it harder to find a good 3 wood to use from both the tee and fairway than any other club. For many it is the most difficult club to hit but if you persevere the rewards are more than worth it.

I hit my 5 wood when a driver is too long for the hole or second shots to Par5's.
As Dave B pointed out its very hard to find a club that can hit off the tee and off the deck, its taken me a few years to finally settle with a i20.
Anything under 200yrds I'm disappointed If I don't hit the green, 220yrds and I know it requires a good hit but still possible. 230-240yrds its a sunday best.

You need to consider what to use to fill the gaps between your driver and 5 iron. If you don't have a 3 and 5 wood what do you use at these distances? Maybe you should consider something like a 4 wood, a 19 and 22 deg hybrid.

180 - 190 I hit my 22 hybrid.
195 - 215 19 hybrid
215 -225 15.5 hybrid

the yardages vary depending on wind and ground conditions. these are generally the clubs ill pull out when I have these numbers. I am thinking of changing the 15.5 hybrid for a 3 wood.

if I am outside 230 I need to be downwind and have plenty if room to miss safely.

Reading this thread got me thinking. I have a 3 and 5 metal in the bag, the 5 used to used a lot, but over last year as my swing changed it stayed in the bag more often than getting used and thinking about it now I only use it on the 18th for position.

My 3 metal I use all the time, off the deck and from the odd tee where accuracy is better than distance.

I've also got a hybrid in the bag, which like the 5 metal is getting used less and less, so when I come to purchase new bats, I think I'll be looking at adding a 3 and 4 iron which I don't currently possess, then at the very least I can always then mix and match my bag for every circumstance.

I hit a 3 wood off the tee instead of driver. Much more reliable than driver and for me not much distance lost.

I can hit both 5 wood and my 23 hybrid from the deck so never use 3 wood from the fairway.

So I stick with a 3 wood then but practice big time over the next few months, any recommendation for a good 3 wood off the deck and tee.prefer ping or Tm.
I'm sure I will see the benefits, and tbh my 4iron will be used as a driving iron should I need to (when I find one on ebay)

I got a lend of Liverbirdies old 3 wood today. didn't miss a fairway all day. shortened course and all temp greens but still scored 4 over.

the driver is in trouble ! :whoo:

When I'm struggling with driver I can usually hit my 3 wood well but after a lesson on Thursday the pro had a nosey in my bag and asked why I have a 5 wood and a 3 hybrid they are pretty much the same club, same length same loft, so going to trade the 5 wood for a 5 hybrid and leave the 4 & 5 irons at home

Got a callaway 4+ steelhead and a Titleist 910 H 19*

Both are excellent off the tee or fairway but I do like striking a 3 iron off the tee in summer.

I've never used a 5 wood properly, but I'm quite confident with my 3 wood off the tee, but I do enjoy hitting my driver, so will rarely go 3 wood off tee unless Driver is going to go too far. I like using my 3 wood off the deck more so into long par 4s or par 5s as I do get a fair but of roll out of my new one rather it just ballooning up like the old one did, giving me very little roll out.

I suppose that my hybrid fits the bill of a 5 wood, as it gets airborne more easily or if need be, I can choke down on it and it'll give more rollout

Carry a driver (12 degrees) and a 5 wood.

Hit the 5 wood pretty solid (usually) off a tee and the ground.

Never really entered my head to get a three wood.

Use my 3wood for 2nd shots into the longer par 5's, or the short ones if the wind is blowing.
From the tee on a couple of our par 4's that require precision off the tee .

... and ultimately off the tee when the driver is misbehaving (driver is usually removed from the bag to force me not to try it when that's the case)
