Im looking to add something to my bag for the coming season. I only play at a short course so all i really need is a driver and Irons with nothing between the 5i and big stick. I got bought a Ping g30 Hybrid at 19 degree a year or so ago, but it has a regular shaft and i just cant get on with it any longer as it feels like a cooked piece of spaghetti when im swinging it.

As i am looking to play some longer courses this year (when i say longer i mean actually with Par 5's) I am intrigued about getting a 3 or 4 wood or something that is adjustable. I have seen a bargain on the Cobra Bio Cell 3-4W on clubhouse golf at a measly 90 quid and i love the look of them and i feel that would suffice for the time being.

Has anyone used one of the above or have any other suggestions, I don't have a budget so to speak i just would like to know what experience other forum goers have been having with their individual fairway woods. I would predominantley like to use it off the tee for tighter par 4's and off the fairways for longer par 5's.

The g30 hybrid will be for sale when i can post in that section

I always play a 5W. Shorter shaft than a 3/4 which often have same length and the distance between my well struck 5w vs a 3w is negligible. Easier to launch too.

Although I use a 3W I'd recommend 4W. I just like the little bit of extra distance the 3 gives me over the 4 and am happy enough it being a little harder to use.

If you can find one, the old X Hot fairways are a cracking club for not much money.

a well struck 5 wood is a real plus to have in the bag, mine on a really good day is a 240 yard shot, thats enough for my short course. So much easier and reliable to hit than a 3 wood which for me as a chomper is arguably the toughest club to hit (from the deck). Loft is your friend, my ping i20 is 18 degrees btw.

Go try some, i will wager you wont see a huge difference is distance between a 3 and a 5, but the 5 will be more consistent.

I swapped my three wood for a 4W about 3 years and it's my go to club - brilliant off the tee - good to hit off the deck and certainly goes as far as my 3w. I have a RBZ Stage 2 one

I love my 4w, great off the tee on long par 3's as the height I get with it means it has a better chance of stopping on the greens and it's far more friendly off the deck than any 3w.

Looks like ill be going for the 4W then, I have the callaway XR driver and have heard great things about their fairways aswell. Need to get something sorted as ive got an open at the weekend and i cant play a par 70 course with Irons and a driver!

Im also after a 4w...

is is it me though or are they hard to come by?

Majority of companies now offer something similar, I believe a 4W is around 17deg loft, With adjustables you can get that loft with most companies offerings, a cranked down 5w is probably something to think about. I know that Cobra Fly Z and Callaway do them.

Might be able to widen your search if you think loft rather than number; 16/17 degrees is about the 4 wood mark these days with the 3 wood edging up to 14/14.5 degrees, some manufacturers like Benross do their 3 woods at 16 degrees. Just a thought.

I have a titleist 910 fd 15 it's very easy to hit, can be picked up very cheaply now and can be adjusted down .75 or up 1.5 so up to 16.5 which is pretty much 4 wood loft.

Very good club

Try a few and see what works best. However if the shaft in the hybrid is "cooked spaghetti" you might want to change that (or the hybrid completely). I prefer a 3H and a 5W as I feel it gives me more options off the tee and in different lies. Carrying a 3W I don't feel I need a 4W

I said in the OP mate that the hybrid was a gonner once i get something to replace it. Its a regular shaft and with my swing speed it just doesnt work.

I know. However a hybrid gives me more versatility especially out of semi rough. I can hit my fairway woods and the hybrid equally well (or poorly) and so having both in my bag gives my options at the top end. I even use the hybrid around the green if the ball is against the fringe grass. Of course it depends on what works best for you

at the time of actually getting the hybrid i was testing a 5w aswell. the hybrid was a little better for me but a lot has changed in my swing over the past year (hence the shaft being too whippy) If i can get a decent adjustable hybrid that would be a good option. Im loving Titleist's 915 range and may spring to a hybrid or fairway wood from that range.

Good shout. I like their range.
