Evening all....A bit bored at the moment so i just said id post to see what peoples opinions were on these!

As im awaiting my new clubs and will more than likely be changing my set makeup AGAIN :o im getting my Irons 4-PW and as the PW is 46 deg ill probably stick a 52 and 58 in for wedges....

At the other end i carry 3 and 5 wood with 1 hybrid but im thinking of maybe dropping my 3 and 5 woods for one 4 wood and maybe slinging in 2 hybrids.

Im not really one for being adventurous and trying to hit a green from say 230mtrs with a 3 wood...The pro's can barely do this let alone club golfers...
Ill usually try lay up to somewhere near a favourite yardage and play a short iron in.

Has anyone ever dropped 2 woods in favour of 1 and a couple of hybrids or would the 17 deg 4 wood a 20 deg hybrid and at the other end 50,54,and 58 deg wedges be better.

Answers on a postcard. ;)

I'm a 4 wood Man.
Got a Cleveland Launcher 17 degree fairway that I can hit just as far as a normal 3 wood. Coupled with a 21 degree Titleist 909 hybrid that goes a mile as well as a 24 degree MP FliHi that's coming for Xmas and that covers me for long clubs.

If you only have 3 wedges, you have enough room for a 3w ,5w and 21 hybrid. Only real need to drop 3 and 5 is if you want 4 wedges. Depends on your preference wedge-wise.

Well Murg,
This is my idea at the moment....
Iv read that most club players should ditch there 3 wood in favour of the 4 wood as the would hit the 4 wood easier and longer.
So ill have I15's 4-Pw (7)
G10 driver (1)
4 wood 17 deg (1)
hybrid at 20 deg (1)
Hybrid at 23 deg (1) This is the same loft as the 4 iron but would more than likely be more versatile although id prefer to keep the 4 iron too as wind plays a huge factor at my course.
2 wedges at 52 and 58 deg (2)
and my putter makes 14 clubs.

I have a 200 mtr (218 yrds) par 3 at our course that i usually hit my 5 wood off and if its not howling then im usually on the green.
But i normally have to go after the 5 wood for this....My 3 wood is too long by at least 20 yards and im not comfortable going down the grip....This is wher im thinking that the 4 wood might be the perfect club for it?

But can you justify the 4 wood for just one hole. Personally I'd rather carry a driver 3 and 5 wood and I know the 3 wood is a great fall back club if the drive mis-fires and the five wood will put me in ideal lay up areas on the par 5's and longer par 4's. It's personal preference but take it from the ling of the club tinkerers, get a settled line up and stick with it.

Im definately settling after this time Homer.....You've heard it here first  im changing no more after this change....They'll be nick-naming me Paddy Harrington next ;)
but im confident that i could carry a 4 wood as far as a 3 wood.
As i said in an above post a good tee shot on our par 5's and id have to really nail a good 3 wood to reach the green....Thats why i normally play 2 irons into the green after my tee shots.....
Iv experimented with hitting woods after my tee shots on the par 5's but to be honest its 50/50 whether i walk off with Pars bogies or birdies with either method....The 2 Irons are the safer play for me for now anyway....If i do get down into singles and i need to par or birdie these holes then i may think about going for them in 2.

I thought you posted the other day that you loved your cobra 5 wood and is your favourite club in the bag.

Are you not just changing for the sake of it? You don't have to have all your clubs the same through out your bag. Alot of pros have the odd club from a different brand thrown in.

Read my sig, it's all there. To me, the difference betwwen the 3w and the 5w, even off a tee peg was negligible as I was never that consistent with the 3w. Swapping to a 4w solves this as it is the best of both worlds. I still only carry one hybrid, as it is either hybrid distance or not, fairway metal distance or not. Not sure it is worth carrying the 4i, as it doesn't get used much, and carry 4 wedges, the scoring clubs.

big fan of the four wood. years ago i couldnt get it up with driver!! 4 wood of the tee 230 ish. i get there now with my driver. but sooooooooo loved that 4 wood cost me 15 scottish pounds off a pal.

Richy,
It was my Wilson 5 wood.....
This is more sentimental too....
But if i do change to a 4 wood this would really become useless.

Kid2 changes clubs - yet again shock!!

In other news.

Homer doesn't change his clubs - just yet!

Only kidding lads!!

I also want it on Record that im not changing clubs because i think that its the answer to all my problems....
Im changing because i wasn't really comfortable with what i was looking down on at address.

And i think that iv found that in the pings.... :o ;)

Good post - I was thinking along the same lines. My 3 wood is 15 degree and my rescue is 19 degree so what would a 5 or a 4 wood give. I have space for one more stick in the bag but I have no idea what to get or to be honest why i would get one
Any idea's ?

I dropped 3 and 5 woods for a 4 so I could add a lob wedge. Then dropped my 3 iron for a 7 wood. Just suited my course better. 4 wood was just as good off the tee as a 3 wood when the situation demanded and 4 and 7 gave better options from the fairway on the par 4s (we have a lot of 400+) and made no difference on the par 5s. You'll have to try it and after a few rounds you'll know if it's the right mix. I still have 3 and 5 woods which I'll swap in when the course is playing longer.

Kid, I'd ask yourself honestly if you think your game is strong enough to warrent 4 wedges. Since joining this forum your only ever hear two things

1) custom fit custom fit custom fit
2) 4 wedges

Personally no my game isn't strong enough to be creative with 4 wedges, and if truth be told I'm not the only one. Next time you play have a look at a few peoples set ups when your on the first waiting to tee off and look how many people use 4 wedges, then if your lucky enough to play with them see if they can actually use them.  Personally from everyone ice played this year most carry stock, 52/54 and then a big wedge 58+ and most will hardly ever use that big 58 wedge. I've just replaced my wedges and it works out stock wedge is 46 & over added a 58 & 52, nice equal spacing ;)

Re the hybrids v woods situation. Up until the summer i have always been a 1,3,5,7w player but after droping my 7w in favour of a 3h things got more consistent. My 3h is versatile enough to cope with what I would do with my 7w and my 5w, so the next logical step for me is to drop my 5 in favour of a 4h because at the moment there is a big step between my 5i and 3h as I'm not a 4i lover. If you know your distances think about what courses you play and what clubs would be nose useful to your game around them courses.

I wouldn't rush to get a "matched set" so to speak, I've done that this season, and now I'm contemplating changing irons to complete my OCD would mean loads of new clubs. If you get on with your current set up of woods stick with it a bang the cash in on lessons. Like me you seem pretty focused on what you want to achieve and is a new matching hybrid gonna do that? Or is a batch of 5 lessons going to have a better impact over a longer period?

Thanks for posting that Oddsocks, I had been thinking along similar lines; up from my 5 to 10 iron set, I have 3 and 5 woods, and 3 and 4 hybrid in my bag and I find my 55* Sw more than adeqate in any close-in pitch situation. If I get around to filling the 14th club vacancy in my bag, it''l likely be a c.52* approach wedge rather than lob.

Well said Oddsocks , i'm not a fan of the 4 wedge route for us amateurs. As Bobmac would say "learn to play a chip/pitch shot correctly." Most ams would benefit from a little practice around the greens just playing different types of shot with the clubs they've got. Cant think theres anything you can do with a 60 that you cant do with an opened up 56 or 58. That leaves room at the top end of the clubs for more options from the f/w or tee. Thats where I like to concentrate my thinking.

As for brands , who cares unless you're a tart ? I have Ping driver , TM 3-wood and Mizzy hybrid and it doesnt seem to do me any harm
