96 Children , Men and Women went to watch a football match and never returned home to their loved ones

They will never be forgotten and thoughts will always go out to the families that lost a loved that day

No one should ever go to a sporting event and not return from it.

An horrific day and it should never be allowed to be forgotten

I was going to post about this but I'm not going to say very much as last year when I did I got a lot of abuse. Suffice to say that many alive today never experienced the visceral, gut-wrenching horror of that day - either at the ground, listening on the radio or watching on TV (as I was). But we should never forget.

The far, far bigger issue than the tragedy itself was the way in which the "establishment" at every level (police, local authority, government and even the press) closed ranks to make this look like the victims were the cause. THAT is contemptible Mr Ingham.

Absolutely - and such establishment covers ups continue today. Must read the Owen Jones book on the subject The Establishment: And how they get away with it.

And back to then I look at the fences - and not just Hillsborough of that day - and it is horrific what the authorities thought was acceptable treatment of football supporters - of human beings going to watch entertainment.

Much less connected world back then unlike today when you know events within seconds . I remember seeing it on the tele though. As I do the Bradford fire which was nearly 20 years ago.

My thoughts go out to my friend and the other 95 who passed away on this tragic day!

will not be long until the family of the 96 get the justice that they have been fighting for so long for.

People also seem to forget it could have easily been us United fans in the ground that day and no matter what rivalries we have the whole country needs to stand firm and be one great team!

It's deplorable that it's taken so long and that getting to the actual truth of what happened on that terrible day has been obstructed at every turn.

When the establishment closes ranks it can be well neigh impossible to achieve justice, but well done to all of those who refused to be silenced. Hopefully some kind of closure is now not too far off.

As a fan of a club also affected by the sad loss of innocent fans attending a sporting event I'll second the sentiments already shown.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend, Matt.

You've probably read this before, but if not, here it is, from an Manchester/FC United fanzine:-

that is the 1st time I have read that quality stuff and 100% spot on ! I was at the Forrest cup game and the ball did cross the line :( but was not at the home game when the semi was played!

I was fortunate enough to be given a ticket for the cup final in 89 and was one of the best games I have ever been too and I include the champions league finals with United! Not just for the football but also the warmth and passion from everyone in the ground! It was the only time mind I have supported liverpool in a cup final though :)

on on a side issue just read tonight that the Bradford Fire may have not been an accident :

hope the chap who had written the book is wrong!

They write some good stuff, TBH.

The Bradford article is shocking, best on a separate thread though.

Closet red, eh?:)
