Played Silverdale in Carnforth a few weeks ago and would say that it is pretty unconventional.

The front nine are pretty standard fare but the back nine is pretty unique and sees you navigating huge quarry's and boulders along the way.

Some holes, specifically the approaches to the 11th and 13th (i think) are pretty special

Really worth a visit if you are in that neck of the woods

I often try to play it when I visit my parents for this reason. I love some of the holes and their ability to surprise.

1 of the holes (6th I think) has a dry stone wall about 50 yards off the tee, so make sure you get it in the air. Mate of mine hit it, and ended up 150 yards behind the teebox!

Agree with Tuggles, it's worth a look, although check that it's not playing mats, as that means you give you a mat to play every shot from, off the green (usually late Oct - late March), which can affect enjoyment.

I'd propose the 12 hole links course of Shiskine on Isle of Arran as being pretty unconventional - and not just because it's only got 12 holes. Great fun.

plenty of courses in the UK and Ireland, but i suppose this will be an American list (most of the courses on it are) prob why none from europe made the list.
