10 on the bloody back nine yesterday, why lord did I puke up on myself???? I even three putted from four foot on a par 3 :( :(

Anyone got some good advice or tips to stop me self destructing?

At least I feel better now; I'm not the only one. I will regularly score between 22 and 26 on the way out. Then when someone tells me my score out, something goes in my head and I'm lucky to match my handicap. Anyone know a good sports psychologist?

We were teeing off at 6:30 AM in the weekly stableford in July so we pre-arranged to pay after the first nine holes. I got 25 points on the front nine and happily walked into the shop to pay my entry fee. The weather forecast was terrible and the pro cancelled the comp as soon as he arrived at the course ! I didn't have the heart to finish the round .
In the pro's defence, by 11 o'clock there was torrential rain which continued for the rest of the day.

Must have played some nice stuff on the front 9 Parmo, nice one.

Did your mindset change for the back nine ? Were you thinking you'd cracked it and relaxed too much, or did you increase the pressue on yourself too much and bottled it ?

Never add up your score after 9 holes, doing so will always effect your scoring on the back 9. Stay in the present and play your own game.

Increase the pressure by judging my last hole on the previous 9 as its two loops of 9.

Don't agree with you there HTL. You need to break the round down into smaller sections and target these sections as to what you are looking for score wise. At any time in a comp round at my own club I know where I am with my scoring and what I need to do to either hit buffer (more likely) or to beat hcp.

I don't think playing blind is ideal.

I can't help but remember the score in my head anyway, so not adding up is not an option.

Question is, if you don't keep score, do you drive ob on the last, going for broke, when a 4i would have seen you safely round in 6 under h/cap? Surely it is better to know where you are?

It's better to know where you are if you can act on it in a good way.

If it makes your brain melt then maybe ignorance is bliss :D

Drive or 4i - whatever your confident in scoring with

Not adding up the scores is what Bob Rotella reckons is best after a good front.

I'm in HTL's camp..If I'm playing well I know, and don't need to know my score until finished. If I'm playing bad, then I definately don't need to know my score. As regards changing my game plan to suit my score........I'm not that good.

I have a fantastic way of relaxing and playing my best golf over the back nine - which I did for the last 6 holes.

Started 10 with a par - which meant I was just about playing to my hcp. I then took 7 on the next hole (par 3) followed by another 7 on the par 5.

This disaster made me relax completely - and I only dropped one shot in the next 6 holes.

The answer, therefore, is to get the blow up in early - stops you thinking about doing well and just allows you to play the shot in front of you.

One strategy to keep focus away from the overall score is to play little 3 hole matches against the course. I am a 8 handicap, so I play each 3 holes against 1 over par. If I beat 1 over par, I win, and if I score 2 over or more, I lose. So I score +2 on the first 3, I lose, but I play the next 3 in level, I win, and back to all square.

Objective is to win the match, and in doing so probably have a decent score going.

Ask your playing partners not to tell you your front nine score, I know you can take a rough estimate, but tell 'em not to tell you all the same. It may help psychologically.

Get your handicap cut.
If you have to play hard to play to your handicap, then you would'nt slacken off on the back 9, score 10 points and still be in your buffer zone.

Been there, done it and still flaming doin it.

I don't know what it is but i can't seem to crack the back 9, On sunday in a cup comp got to the 10th tee +9 off a 25 hcap playing quite well only to shoot +20 on the back 9.

Gutted, but i'm determined to crack it and i'm only a good round away from it.
