Watched some of the practice for the Aussie Grand Prix today and have to say what a dissapointment the cars are.Ok there is some incredible engineering gone into the cars and the 1.6 engines are a work of art with energy recovery and turbo chargers but the cars sound like a load of bee's in a dustbin!.They also this year have fly by wire braking which judging by the practice session is very unreliable with brakes cooking and cars coming of the track due to the system not working properly. These cars are still a work in progress and unreliability I think is really going to be an issue come the race on Sunday, I think there will be some suprise results in the first few races I seriously wouldnt be suprised if just a handfull of cars finish the first race.

If it shakes up the sport. I'm all for it. The last couple of years of Red bull take over has been boring. ( I have always said the red bull team where cheating, but have been lucky/skilled enough not to get caught)

The only thing I dislike this year, is the Aero. There are some real ugly ducklings thanks to this lower front end regulation.

Re: 2014 F1 cars

It's a bore fest now go back to standered cars with no electronic help that's where the real drivers shine

Re: 2014 F1 cars

Not a big F1 fan and so any changes make little difference. If the cars are more unpredictable early on it may make the first few races worth a look but once they iron these issues it'll be back to a procession. Give me touring cars every time

Re: 2014 F1 cars

FBW braking, hadnt seen that change. On throttles fbw is fine but to get stopped, I dont think you can beat the good old servo setup.

I'm also not a great fan, much prefer two wheels!

I read an interesting piece this week that speculated on the possibility that no cars with Renault engines will finish the race!!

Codswallop!

How can you possibly justify that statement! In fact i challenge you to justify it!

They simply had the best 'team'! And by 'team' I include every part of it, from Designer, to Tyre selection/set-up to Race-Day Management.

Certainly don't think they'll all finish, but hope they all finish safe!

@shivas How can you blame the 'fly by wire' system for brakes cooking! I put it down to the Colin Chapman syndrome - add lightness.

@FD That's a distinct possibility. they haven't been the epitome of reliability up to this point! Mercedes seem to be the reliability kings at this stage!

Already been semi proved… they ran some sort of non electrical Traction control linked to the suspension, because it didn't run through the cars ECU the FIA didn't care.

Re: 2014 F1 cars

Chaps the brakes boiling is pretty common. They have to work out the blanking required at a circuit like Melbourne which is a metaled road and used by agricultural vehicles it lacks grip. The lack of grip puts more stress on braking. The tyre grip will be low because the surface is pretty smooth. Then you consider the aero levels, I suspect the braking has to be hard because the drag levels are lower.
As for RedBull, sorry that's my fault :) I was vettels tyre engineer when he came to F 1 the boy is smart and asks intelligent questions. The other issue is adrian newey, there are no other car designers in his class apart from Rory Byrne but he just consults for Ferrari now. Anyway that's my take after a decade of traveling the F1 circuit ... Love Melbourne still remember my first time in 99 and Johnny Herbert having a wee in his car on the grid, a regular habit, lovely bloke though always pleasant and affable.

Mischievous Speculation!

You surely don't think, with all that was at stake, that there wouldn't have been some sort of challenge? Preposterous!

They are/were all after whatever advantage they could get and, i'm sure, 'pushed the boundaries'. But that's what F1 is all about!

And, like Golf, if it doesn't break the Rules, it's legal! so not cheating!

That noise is like a blown floor or cracked exhaust not TC. The thing with redbull is constant whispering about variable ride height.

Re: 2014 F1 cars

Why dont they just go back to the pre driver aid v10 cars of the 90's, proper racing cars :D.Agree with Homer about the touring cars much more entertaining especially with Plato amd Neal on the track, or off it!!

Team's have always cheated in F1 (and always will). The FIA finds out about these 'cheats' (sometimes they don't), then either create a new rule outlawing them or bring them into the rules and regs. There are loads of examples of this in the past, but as I said, Red bull are either too smart or lucky and weren't found out.

Re: 2014 F1 cars

To me this is ment to be the pinnacle of motor sports and for that reason cost cutting, tyre limits, fuel restrictions and not having refueling during the race is killing the sport.
I don't disagree with design restrictions to a degree but it's made racing boring. Give me the racing of the 80's any day of the week.

Re: 2014 F1 cars

The motors sound dreadful some of the front end 'aero' is [as has already been noted] fugly... But I'll still be watching... Just love my motorsport four or two wheels with or without roofs...

Love the return of Martini colours and great to hear the loud cheering when Danny Ric took the pole then the even more audible groan when Lewis snatched it back...

Re: 2014 F1 cars

Well, qualifying was superb this morning, and the race tomorrow looks to be a cracker as well. Personally, I like the new sound of the cars...

Re: 2014 F1 cars

Just watched the race and I have to say it was quite impressive!, some of the cars looked stunning close up (apart from the Ferrari :D) and the racing seemed very unpredictable.Looks like Mercedes and Red Bull will battle it out this year at the front and it will be interesting to see how close Vettel can get to the Mercedes in the next race, cant wait!!!
