After last years horrendously wet summer and year in general I decided to take rather drastic action and joined not one but two new golf courses. Having shelled out over £800 at an average parkland course for only 5 months golf I knew it was time to bite the bullet.

Today I paid my fees and joined West Kilbride Golf Club after a slightly nervous wait to see if I would get in or not this season. I'm absolutely cock-a-hoop and hope for a good years golf. Just need to find some regular playing partners and get stuck in!

Any "forumers" in the area are welcome to a knock.

Looks very green, if you know what I mean, not the kind of links courses I have experienced of late with knee high wispy gorse grassy stuff and tight fairways.

So envious of your membership prices up their, you can be members of at least 2 clubs for the price of 1 down here and be playing on links and play all year round!

Hope you settle in well and enjoy your golf their.

How often do you plan to go across to Machrahanish now you've joined WK?

Once a month. Make it a day trip, play 36 in the summer etc. At £260 its really a nice luxury that I treat as a "bolt hole". Brilliant track well worth the effort and fees.

Crawford, do you always drive round or have you ever tried hopping ferries via Arran? I've never worked it out (nor the cost!) but often wondered if that might be quicker.

I think it is quite costly with the ferries, lots of faffing about and waiting too.
Give me that drive any day, provided the Rest and be Thankful is not closed!!!!

The Cowal ferry is another way, never really thought of going that way.

Arran is extortionate to go via. I used to sometimes use the CalMac ferries from Gourock to Dunoon then drive round to Portavadie and get the ferry from Portavadie to Tarbert. Sadly CalMac have stopped taking cars from Gourock to Dunoon therefore you can't buy a cheaper hopscotch ticket.

You can use Western Ferries from McInroys Point at Gourock to Hunters Quay at Dunoon but it actually works out more expensive, just saves a bit of mileage plus I quite enjoy the drive. Makes a pleasant journey.

Having read many posts of yours about courses experience it appears you've been around a fair bit, where do you play?

I play out of Hayling in Hampshire but originally from Gourock. Played most of the decent tracks in Ayrshire. Steadily working my way through the top 100! :)

Be interesting to see what you think of Gourock now. When did you last play it?
