I was wondering if anyone could help on the above subject, which is at Wentworth in May this year. I'm fairly new to golf in that I've only just started playing and taking a more detailed interest. Does anyone know when the entry list for this tournament would be finalised? Also, roughly how many people (at a guess) would attend this event to watch? I was looking at this event to be the first one I ever go and watch live so wondered how good an event it is to watch.

Any help would be much appreciated. My apologies in advance for what are basic and fairly silly questions(!), but rather than search for ages on google I thought I'd ask here.

Thanks

Hi, and welcome

The BMW is a flagship tournament of the PGA and usually, all the top European player are there. Not many Americans bother cos it's hard to justify getting on a plane for £1m these days!!

The crowds are pretty large on match days but viewing is good there and Wentworth easily copes. I personally always go on the Wednesday practice day as there are relatively few people there and you can get up close to the best players and see technique etc. The downside is that its usually a pro am day and its often one pro and 4 amateurs per game.

I would certainly recommend going its a great atmosphere and a wonderful course. Take a look at the properties bordering the course - a lottery win wouldn't be enough.

Dont apologise for asking questions on this forum - thats the strength of it.

Hi

not too sure when the entry list etc will be published but this is the flagship event of the European Tour so most of the big names will be there. If your going to attend a tournament in Britain, then with the exception of the Open you couldnt really get much better than Wentworth

Great event, well organised for the visitor. You get to park a bit closer if you drive a BMW.

Pro-am day is pretty good, and there are usually some pretty good players playing. Some interesting celebs and ams too. Thursday and Friday are great days to go. Some people follow a group, some stay in one spot and most do a little of both.

It's going to be my first pro tournament visit as well. I was going to go to see one last year but didn't get round to it.

Really looking forward to it. I'm going on the Sunday and have grandstand tickets too :D

Can anyone recommend the best viewing spots round there ? Sorry don't mean to hi-jack the thread.

If either of you two happen to drive BMWs, you can normally get free parking and park in a closer car park to the entrance also.

If you don't see if you can borrow one from a mate!

There is a great area where the 8th tee, 10th green and 11th tee all converge. I usually head for there and you can see 2 tee off's and a green (par 3) with only moving a few yards. The only thing is that the Sunday will bring big crowds and you may not get to see so easily as you wont be able to move around. The first green can be good for the second tee as well. You will find some stay on a tee or green most of the day and others walk with specific groups or you can mill about catching up with those who you fancy seeing for a hole or two. There is also some free grandstands to rest up on - I especially love the 14th, par 3 hole. Look out for the girls fromm "Yum Yums" wagon for a burger or hot dog and do get to the range to see the guys hitting - its awesome!

Sold my M3 last August :( Swapped to Audi A4. tbh, I wish I hadn't. Was an insane car, but also insanely expensive to run.

I went last year and was a beautiful day on the Sunday , really warm, and am going again this year. I like the first par 3 (I think the second holes could be wrong) but you can sit on the bank right near the green and see the shots drop on. I followed molinari (francesco) & manassero last year for the majority and wasn't big galleries so was quite close. Seeing them hit a golf ball close up is amazing and well worth going.

As Royal Ascot is 15 minutes (maybe 30 in the traffic) away I'd be happy to sing a visitor in if anyone fancies a game

Thats a great offer HJS- when I first started to go to Wentworth, always with my 6h/cap brother in law, we used to stay there till about 3pm and then go and play Leatherhead on the way home.

Sadly too old to walk Wentworth then play 18 holes these days

the 2nd is good viewing and right by a car park (I think the first one after the bmw entrance). it's also not too far from the tented village.
it's a shortish par 3. elevated tee to elevated green over a valley, two big bunkers if they're short. you can get right above the green directly opposite the tee.

It's not that short - when I played it it was about a 6 iron and luckily a solid par!

I've been there a few times. It's much better than watching the match play event as the crowds are spread out more. I walked the course in the morning, had lunch at the tented village (about 7 quid for a burger) and the walked the back nine in reverse in the afternoon to meet the final groups. The range and putting green are a nice place to see the pros up close and normally not too crowded. I really enjoyed seeing how relaxed and steady the pros swing and how they manage their game around the course.
I'm sure it will draw all the in-form European Players, maybe even John Daly?
