Perhaps he has a bad case of the yips.
Maybe the curved bit near the hosel is designed to give a gear effect to counter yipped putting strokes.

The key word is niche......it may be complete sh!t but it's different to the norm.
I wouldn't subject the rest of my clubs to having that monstrosity in the bag next to them. No headcover would be able to hide that enough!!
