We played 2 singles matches in one fourball group in our Tuesday swindle group this morning, due a shortage of tee times. As a player from one match might show the line of a putt to a player from the other match, is there anything in the rules to prevent this arrangement? It was only a friendly thing and not a formal club competition btw.

You can't play a strokeplay event and a matchplay event at the same time. Too many differences in the rules as to procedure/penalties etc between the two types of game.

If its just 2 matches on the go, the not what I'd do, but, cant think of a reason not to.

You could always have a gentleman's agreement that if a situation exists where one putt from the other match might show the other a line then they'd have to look away if you are bothered.

We do this a lot in club matches where tee times are tight. We work on the principle that the first match to putt finishes the hole first. Some pairs turn away when the others are putting but most don't.

No ideal but pragmatic on a crowded course.

Del, you asked if there was anything in the Rules to prevent two matches being played together. The Rules have nothing to say on the subject as far as I know, but they do contemplate 3 ball matchplay in which 3 simultaneous matches are going on amongst 3 players. That would validate your arrangement, don’t you think?

Due to a lack of available tee times, we will be playing the singles matches at the Old Farts v Whippersnappers meet like this.
Have done it before there and at Woodhall Spa and Gainsborough and it didn't cause any problems at all.
