Signed up for this today. Never bothered before as a fair bit of my golf "opinion" is influenced by him indoors who has played for a lot longer than me. He's not keen on such comps but I figured it would be fun and a different challenge so my name is on the board :)

What to take though? I'm thinking my 23 degree hybrid and an 8 iron. The latter gets me about 160yds so could plot my way round the longer holes ok with it and the 8 iron is good on the shorter Par 3's and is my favourite chip and run club and figured it would make do as no luxury of wedges in my bag? Other thoughts were my 5 wood instead of hybrid as that gets me about 180ish at the moment. I guess the hybrid is more versatile though from the rough stuff.

Any thoughts?? Thanks.

Seems a good choice with the distances you said , you should have most shots covered there ..

I would say you know best because it depends mostly on your capabilities and the course you are going to play on. Personally I would take a 4 iron and a wedge for most courses..

i think you need to know your own course well enough to chose the correct clubs, i would personally use something like 6i, pw, putter. 2 6i's and a full wedge would get me to most greens, providing the weather was good.

Sounds like I'm on the right lines then :)

My 23 degree is a 4 iron replacement so it's that or the 5 wood for distance - reckon the 23 degree will be more useful and a mis-hit with that is less destructive than my 5 wood!

A wedge would leave me short on our 3rd, 5th and 13th holes (Par 3's with water). I think the only debate now is whether it's a 7 or 8 iron....

Thanks, Amanda

I would take something to get me near or on in two, and then something for around the greens. Given very few shots into the green are going to be full shots, you will probably spend a lot of time just off or near the green, so having a club you are comfortable chipping with would be the most important.

From what you have said, an 8i and hybrid sounds a wise choice.

Think I would use 7, PW, putter. Assuming the 7 will reach your par 3's. If not swop it for the club that does. Not many holes that you cant reach with them and at least give a put for par or boggy at the worst.

P.S. on my course it would be 4 Hybrid 7 iron and putter. Due to 2 long par 3's (need the Hybrid for them) the other par 3 would be the 7iron. Keep my fingers crossed I kept out of the bunkers. Mind you can still open a 7 iron alot. Some bunkers you can put out of with a bit of luck.

I like the hybrid, 8 iron option. Worth thinking about the par 3s at your course and how you would play them. If they were all 6 iron carry over water, say, might need to be rather fiddly with the hybrid.

I would practice a few shots going down the hybrid shaft 4 or 5 inches and giving it a proper hit. May be easier then trying to baby it.

Assuming you can use any three clubs, I would go 20deg hybrid, 7i and PW - with greens as they are at present I could blade a PW to putt with quite effectively. If you had to have a putter, 6I, PW, Putter.

Good idea. The 8 is ideal for the 3rd and 5th Par 3's which have water in front and the hybrid for the similar but longer 7th. I'll have a go at gripping down the hybrid for the 120-160 "gap"... Thanks.

Our turkey trot is 3 clubs and a putter this Sunday, I shall be taking my 3 or 5 wood (All depends who behaves on the range first!), 7i and PW.

They are a giggle this type of comp as long as you don't take it seriously.

I really dont get it when the organisers insist on only 2 clubs.
If it's meant to be a fun comp, let people have 3 clubs.
Long, medium and short club and a putter.

I always play in our 3 club comp.enjoy it as its something differant, have won it twice in the past and also this year,I always take 3 wood 8i and putter.I had a gross 96 playing of 21,and had worst rounds with a full set.

I feel I need the 3 wood for the par 5s and the long par 4s also you can improvise with the 3 wood putting the ball back in your stance a touch and playing a low running shot takeing a bit of distance off if need be,also think a 8i is the better option just in case you go in to many bunkers.

But it really is just thinking your way round your course and taking what you think is best for you.
Good luck with it.
