I was playing a course last week and there was this man taking two balls around with him, in that he was scoring 2 rounds.

How does the etiquette stack up here? I'm guessing if the course is quiet, nobody is going to suffer.

Is it frowned upon?

I sometimes throw down a 2nd ball and replay a shot if I am out on my own. I dont see a problem with it.

Yeah I've took a second drive once with my Driver after hitting my 3 Wood to see the differences. But I think it would be fun to have a double round going on, especially when I am learning.

I am not sure if i'd want to play 2 balls all the way round. too much zig zagging....

Depends if the course is empty or not I guess. I wouldn't mind the zig zagging, but I'd feel bad if there were irate golfers waiting for me.

I was just wondering if it was against the rules or not, because essentially I'm paying for 18 holes, but playing 36.

best way is one drive then 2 second shots, less dispersion and much less chance of holding anyone up.

If the course is quiet I do it, never if anyone immediately behind though

Yeah that's a good idea. Was playing with my Uncle and Dad last bank holiday and while they were searching for a ball I took 3 balls on an approach shot. The first one obviously the shot and the other 2 were practice. He said, you can't do that. Obviously I batted it away and said I was just practicing. Lucky he didn't pull the R&A rule book out on me. ha ha.

If the course is quiet I have no problem with it, I will often drop another ball and play a different shot shape etc. The best practice is on the course.

Well this is what I mean, other than the local range there isn't anywhere really I can practice and try and hone some skills.

In a friendly match then its no problem, in a comp you couldnt do it. This time of year i'll play 9 holes in an evening and hit lots of extra shots on the way round.

I'm not a member of any course so can't just play 9.

I know you can't do it in a comp, my Dad was just being daft.

From a personal perspective, as long he was holding no-one up then I have no issue. However, many clubs, including ours have a rule that you are only allowed to play 1 ball.

This is exactly what I do when the course is quiet and agree with the sentiment in the second paragraph.
