So, I decided to give golf a break over the winter. My last round was the end of October 2013. I've been working in getting fitter and stronger over the winter (core/strength)
Had my first medal comp of 2014 yesturday. I went out with wanting to get my set up comfortable and my swing fairly consistent. I took no woods with me so had 3iron-56 degree wedge, only because I wanted to keep the ball reletivly close or on the fairways. It was wet first thing then dryed up later but we had a 2-3 club wind.
Anyway I shot 98-14=84nett but came off pleased with my set up and swing, I didn't top the ball, a few dodgy contacts and the odd slice/pull but on the whole my 3iron was pretty straight off the tee, putting was strong (which is my strongest point of my game) had a few birdie chances, sunk some long putts.
I'm going to introduce the woods back this week, and need to get my feel from 50 yards in again and then the season will truely begin.
So you can still hit a high score but if you have set targets and goals then you can still come off feeling happy and look forward to the next round and now your first score is posted then next round is to improve on that.

good post.

I also havent played since October 2013, first medal yesterday and solely down to the_coach on here with his advice I was hitting the ball better than I have in 3 years! outdriving single fig h/cap fc's 20 yrs younger and iron play was crisp and laser straight......

unlike you bobmysterkay I had 39 putts and short game was appalling............puts for birdie would be a bogie, and just off the green would also end up with a poor chip and 2 putts.............bogie city grossing an 84........but I was super pleased with every other aspect of my game.......

I think if you aim to improve in the first few competitive rounds and not just 'to win' then it will take away the dissapointment of not being in the hunt, and will set up the next round without trying to think about to many things at once.
