Got my 3rd card in - all of which were pretty poor.
Got told today I've got a handicap of 13.
Happy with that considering.
Also got talked into taking the last slot in tomorrow's medal.
Let's hope I don't make a complete arse of myself.

Nice one mate. 13 is pretty solid!

Just waiting for my 1st official handicap in over 8 years to be activated. Hopefully it will be done by tomorrow when I go down to the club. I'm not up on Master Scoreboard yet so they've not made it "official" that way, but hopefully by tomorrow or the end of the weekend.

Thanks Aztec.
My cards probably warranted 16 ish but I've been having a poor run.
Having said that, went out today and played to it exactly.
Good news is I still didn't play great so know I can get better.
Is it fairly normal to get a handicap a couple of shots less than you might expect?

Not sure to be honest. My cards all came in at around 19 if I take out the more-than-double bogey holes so that's what I'd expect.

I did play with the club captain who has been trying to move the h'cap process along as he knows I need it for the Beau Desert meet in a few weeks. He was impressed with some of my golf and said that course management and consistency is what's holding me back, so I don't know if he'll mention anything to the H'Cap secretary. I expect to be somewhere in the 18-21 mark though, so I'll find out!

If you weren't aware that they are likely to adjust anything worse than double bogey back to just a double, then yes. Same thing happened to me when I put my cards in earlier in the year, best was 88 (SSS 71) so I was expecting 17 but because that included an 8 at a par 4 they actually put me at 15. A pleasant surprise :)

That's a good solid starting handicap, congrats. :)

Don't be too down on yourself if you don't play to it at the weekend if you've never played off the whites before. That and being in a medal is a whole new ball game to get used to imo.

That's a great starting handicap! I'm on 22 after 3 years! Coming down gradually though.

Good luck in the medal, focus on playing your own game and try to forget all about the score until you've finished. Only then should you count up and see how you've done - it takes the pressure off this way I feel.

Matty,if I'd taken your advice,I probably wouldn't have been stood on the 7th tee 14 over and on my 2nd sleeve of balls.
:( :o
Playing my own game covered the last 12 in +5,so I feel a bit better.
