Bit nervous, tried to get a game with a few members I know at my new club but will be playing tomorrow with 2 mebers I don't know in my first ever medal round. Looking forward to it but pretty nervous.

Medal rounds you play until you complete the hole is that correct? Or can you N/R (but that puts you out of the comp)?

Yep, unless it's a stableford.

You can N/R which puts you out of the comp. Some will do it when they are shooting crazy scores on holes, but I'd advise against it. Even if you card a 10, it's better than ingraining the habit of N/R-ing.

Would tell you not to be nervous, but it won't help. You will be. I was a wreck during my first medal, but enjoyed it. The nervousness doesn't last long- just take deep breaths.

Let your fellow competitors know it's your first medal- they'll keep you right.

Keep the swing smooth and enjoy.

Make sure you take provisionals so you don't have to walk back to the tee !

good luck.

Sound advice!

Good luck and as virtuocity said it will be futile of us to say don't be nervous. just remember EVERYBODY hits bad shots don't worry about it and when they crop up try forget them and think of the next one- easy said than done even the pros can't do that at times.

I always like to think- it's just a golf shot no biggie.

Played my first medal in February and somehow won with a nett 68, obviously quite enjoyed it and it paid for my new putter grip, was a fluke though as I smashed a massive 28 points in the following weeks stableford.

Went really well. Luckily I was in a 3 ball with a 22 and 28 handicapper who had been at the club a couple of years so understood how I was feeling. They both dogged their first drives which relaxed me and I managed to get a decent drive away. One thing that I didn't think about was playing off the white tee's!!! Totally changed the feel for the course and obviously the distance too. Certain holes seemed totally different to when I've played off yellows.

I was going really well until the 11th. The white tee is a total blind shot to the fairway with OB right. Hit my drive which even though I tried to aim more left as I normally hit a fade went right so hit a provisional which I thought would be fine. Walked up to find my 1st just OB and then couldn't find my provisional because of this I was told I had a N/R so was out of the comp - can someone confirm if this is correct??

Ended up net 72 with one blob, was happy with the way I played as the course was wet and it was raining all the way round plus wind which is normal for the course anytime of year really. Playing partners were great, really helpful and very good to go round with.

That's not correct - you could have gone back to the tee and hit another one (5th shot though). Whether it was worth doing that rather than just NR is your choice.

Well played mate. Glad you enjoyed it.

Tough conditions today. Par first time out shows there's more to come.

Yes didn't think about that, tbh not had much time to think about it as I went just about straight to football after.

Think I'm really going to enjoy the competitive side of being a member of a club as well as the social side.

Yes really tough at times, my partners had a small sweep with another 2 ball but couldn't wait around to find out if I won a couple of quid.

Thought that would be the case, never mind you learn from mistakes.

Also preferred lies/lift, clean and replace is still on due to all the rain. If I hit my tee shot and it lands just off the cut fairway so in slight semi fairway can I lift, clean and replace or is it just on the fairway that this can be done?

That may well be a local club rule, ours has been pick and place on all parts of course except hazards. But that does change from club to club and from day to day.

Re playing comps from whites, me and PP always play off the whites , even when not in a comp. like you have said it is a differant course and it is suprise good how you soon get used to playing off whites.

well done me man.

Cheers Tash. Going to try get some practice in after work and may start to play from the whites as a test each time.

I'll check our local rule.

Well done. First one done and so onwards and downwards (handicap wise)

No - only closely mown areas - fairways and green fringes.
