its only the monthly stableford so I am trying to get my head around the scoring system as always used my iphone before, its not allowed but fortunately the course has good markers.

so any tips for this? I am playing off 24 I have been told due to my last card being a 98 but down to a 93 for h/c purposes, I assume its 1 shot per hole then an extra shot for SI 1-6.

Any etiquette things I need to remember?

Also ordered a v-easy so Bob, hurry and get it shipped, need some putting practice ;)

tell the guys you are playing with its your first comp and ask them to point out anything you need to know on the way round. Stay still when they are playing, be ready to play your shots when its your turn but most importantly have fun and enjoy yourself :)

The most important thing to do and remember is to just enjoy yourself.

If you spend too much time worrying about the rules and not trying to upset anyone or do anything wrong, your game will suffer.

Remember, if in doubt about anything just asked your playing partners.

Your first competition is always a worse one, mainly because you are worrying about others and not about your own game, just relax and have fun, at the end the day it's only a game.

When you are in a hazard like a bush or the trees look for animal scrapings and use the rules to your advantage. Though it's important to relax an enjoy it, it's equally important to focus when it's your turn to play and take your time. I have wasted countless shots by rushing.

Also accept before you set out you will hit some bad shots. It's inevitable. When they happen shrug them off and assess the next shot with a level head. Know when to take your medicine and when you can have a go.

Good luck. I hope you have a blinder :D

Relax, Enjoy it, try not to get flustered and just remember the birdie on the first at Beau Desert !!

That looks like desperation from the start Tiger :) try and be a bit more optimistic :)

Don't forget Gibbo, by the time you've achieved more than double bogey on your single shot holes you won't score in a stableford so don't frustrate yourself and waste everybody's time, pick it up, take a deep breath and start again on the next hole. :D

Trust me I've been there recently , just relax, remember everyone your playing with has been there, don't worry about the first tee- just set up, slow backswing and keep it in play.
Wouldn't take the v-easy you may get some funny looks! ;-)

haha, I get funny looks anyway, either when I boom one and they think bandit, or a deft pitch and they think bandit or a sliced drive, crap chip and dodgy putt then they think... he's cack :)

I've only played 4 comps so far and my advice would be, if your not sure where you ball has gone after you've hit it, take a provisional and make your partners aware of this decision.

you can take a provisional whenever you like, it saves the embarrasement if you can't find your original shot of having to go back to the original spot and replay it.

Also, if you play with people you don't know, get talking to them and explain your a new member, members love new members and most of the time make them feel welcome.

Just go out and have fun, play to your strengths and you'll be fine.

Whatever you do, if you are unsure ask before proceeding. That includes taking free and penalty drops, marking nearest points of relief etc. If in doubt play a provisional. Keep the pace of play up and let the group behind through if you drop behind and lose a hole. Apart from that just hit the blood thing and enjoy it. What's the worse that can happen? 0.1 back. Big deal

Don't forget to sign your card, most common reason for DQ.

Swing easy, relax, be ready to play when it's your turn.

Have fun,

I got a net 97 in last weeks Wednesday cup medal but no-one died.

My bum starts squeaking when I get card in hand :)

Cheers

Doc...

Use your shots wisely. You have 2 shots on a fair few holes so don't waste them. Use the new hybrids off the tee to keep the ball in play, they're plenty long enough to get you on most greens in 3 at worst. Simple case then of 2 putting for a 2 or 3 point score.
You'll be down to 20 before you know it.

Good luck and enjoy yourself. Let us know how it goes.

I'm sure you didn't mean it as I'm reading it but you can't take free relief if you're in a bush or anywhere you wouldn't be able to make a swing if the animal scrapings weren't there.

Gibbo, are you sure you're to play off a handicap as if you were in the competition? You can't (shouldn't be able to) win anything for the comp if you haven't played 3 qualifying rounds yet, and it might be confusing for the handicap sec to mark your card if there are stableford scores on it already. Don't know, probably just me.

After all that, just try to enjoy it and don't get upset with yourself.

I have 3 cards in as actually played 2 previous to joining and then 3 since. My previous scores with stableford were just my ones on golfshot on iphone, we also marked normal cards for round scores which were submitted on Saturday.

Not arsed if I am allowed to play to win, just be nice to have a measure of how well I play compared to approx 35 others

as for getting upset with myself, there may be a few blue words muttered under my breath at times ;)
