Playing in my first ever club championships this weekend. Despite my recent form in comps, which has been dire to say the least, I am really looking forward to it. :)

I've gone from shooting mid to low 90's with the occasional sub 90 round to recording a 116 in the last comp :o which was strokeplay and my card was pretty much wrecked after 3 holes.

Been down to the range most nights this week in an attempt to find some form from somewhere and it does feel like things are getting back on the right track. It's the par 3's that have really been hurting me, just can't seem to get off the tee! Going to leave the rescue club at home and go back to playing irons off the tee this week and see how it goes.

I'm not expecting big things, but will enjoy the weekend no matter what, although (if the golfing God's are listening) playing near to my handicap at least once would make me a happy chap. :)

Go in with an open mind and don't focus on whats gone before in recent games. Have a strategy and stick with it. If you believe an iron short on the par 3's and then a chip and a putt is the better option go with it (how I wish I'd listened to my own advice at 17 last week!)

If you have a bad hole don't go chasing a score on the other holes as that will lead to more errors. Take your punishment and move on. Above all you are there to have fun. You can't win it in the first round but yopu can play yourself out of it. I shot nett 74 last week in the first round and thought I was out of it (ok a net 56 meant I was but in normal circumstances....) but had a level par 70 (including quadruple bogey on 17) and finished 8th overall.

Everyone will be nerovous so don't let the nerves beat you. Above all its meant to be fun so go out and enjoy it

Good luck Phil!

The only "advice" i'll give you is this....

Played a round with my pro the other week and after hitting a "wormcutter" about 150 yards down the fairway I muttered darkly to myself.

He turned to me and said "It's not perfect but it's in play and golf is about expectations, be happy you are on the fairway and play it as a 5"

So instead of thinking about how much distance I had to go I hit to the 100 yard marker, onto the green with my next and a 3 footer for par"

Mind you I took 4 to get out of a bunker on the next :o

Don't be afraid to play a 3 as a 4 if you need to I'm going to at the 12th on Sunday (record so far is an 11)

Good luck.
Par 3's have been my problem holes most of the season but I took a mates tip and stopped teeing the ball up on the shorter ones and it seems to be paying dividends. Just finding a nice piece of turf and hitting them exactly how I would play an approach shot to a par 4 as I used to get under the ball before and lose a lot of distance. Now getting to hit the greens a little more regularly which is nice. Problem is I hit our 128 yard 7th with a beautiful wedge the other week and four putted the poxy thing! Luckily it was just a friendly, 'cos that would have gutted me in a medal.
