I played a 9 hole stableford competition for those of us taking group lessons at Blue Mountain Golf yesterday. We were holing everything out so we could submit cards for handicap too.

I got off to a great start scoring 5, 5, 5 on the 1st three holes (pars 4, 5, 4). The 4th is a 210 yard par 3 with water and a bunker covering the left front of green at 175 yards. My playing partners were both shooting for the green with drivers, whilst I thought I'd play a safe 5 iron down the right to leave a 50 yard lob wedge onto the green. I was thinking percentage golf and my great score to protect/improve on. Even if my shot veered left, it wouldn't reach the water.

Needless to say, it went straight in the water. No bounce and run in, nope, straight in at about 180 carry. I'd have been fine if my shot had gone where (I thought) I was aiming towards the right, but it went left start to finish. Also, I've only ever hit my 5 iron more than 160 yards once before and that would have included roll out on a firm fairway etc. whereas there was rough in front of the water to stop a wayward shot rolling in.

Naturally, both my playing partners made the green with their drivers, whilst I ended up with 6 strokes. Meltdown ensued and I finished on 15 points and 54 strokes against a par of 37. Oh what could have been. +2 gross from 1st three holes and +15 from next 6 holes.

You know that double bogey is the maximum score for any hole when going for your first handicap?
Yes, thanks. Limit would apply to 4 holes, taking a shot off each, making it 50 strokes. I was more upset that I squandered such a great start. I'm still taking the positives from it and looking forward to my 1st sub 100 round.

You have no idea how often you will be saying "I had a round of two halves." or "I played really well until........."

It's the biggest thing in this game when your a high handicapper. Work on your consistency it will get your scores down faster than anything else.

Hear, hear.

I went out today. Out in 42 (par 35), back in 54 (par 34). It is amazing how often you'll have stories like that.

Some good stuff to build on. Are you a member anywhere? Are you still having lessons. There are a couple of good pros at Blue Mountain (and I know Steve the head chef very well so tend to get get big portions in the 19th). I use BM for some of my practice and tend to use the outdoor mat at the end of the bays. If you fancy looking at membership or just want a game somewhere, give me a shout and come over to my place

I got a handicap membership at Bird Hills to get a handicap and play competitions, but haven't decided if or where to join as a full member yet. I'm certainly up for a game and it would great to see/play your course. I'll send you a PM.

I'm still going to weekly group lessons at Blue Mountain with Duncan Woolger (coach) and the odd a one to one. Also trying to get as much time on the course in the hope that it all comes good soon.
