19deg 5 wood vs 19 deg hybrid

As title says what are the difference. I cannot get on with hybrids so was looking to switch to a 5 wood. I have a 3 wood which I can use ok so thought the 5 wood be good too. Am I wrong to persume this. I never felt comfortable using the hybrid it just felt so wrong. I want to fill the gap between my 3 wood 15 deg and my 5 iron 24deg so thought the 19 is roughly in the middle.

I prefer fairway woods to hybrids,but I think you would find quite a gap between a 5w & 5i.
I did anyway.

There is a good chance you will hit a 19 hybrid or woos much further than say a 19 degree iron.

19 hybrid or wood leaves a big gap to that 5 iron.

A second club like a 7 wood would be ideal in the future.

I've just ordered a 5w to replace a hybrid. For me it's easier to get airborne and control.

Have always much preferred fairway woods to hybrids, I go with the following

4 Iron
21 degree wood
18 degree wood
15 degree wood

I find the 18 and 21 degree woods work really well out of the rough too and generally use them as a rescue but they are a little lighter and can suffer if the grass is very dense.

I had the same dilemma as you. After messing about on the trackman i found the replacement for my 17 degree hybrid was a 19 degree 5 wood That was 1 inch longer than my hybrid. It was a good swap

If your looking for only 1 club then prob best go with something adjustable like the cobra 5-7 wood, then you can play with the loft to get the gap right.

Why can't you get on with your hybrid. I find it more versatile as it gives a higher ball flight on par 3's and is better out of semi rough. Of course that's what suits me and if you find a good five wood, perhaps a low profile mode, then go for it

I have to say with regards to this my fairway woods are more deep faced, I find anything that is too low profile does not fill me with confidence

This is why i swapped. Much bigger surface area for me to hook it with

I find a 5w much easier to hit than a 3w, so if you're fine with the 3w I'd say go for the 5w or even a 7w to fit the gap better. I have a 40yd carry gap between 5w and 5i and wouldn't want to be without the club(s) inbetween.

Swing speed.
This is what it mostly comes down to between hybrids and fairways.
Generally, a lower swing speed will need the fairway as it produces more spin and so keeps the ball in the air longer. A slowish swing speed can make it tricky to get a lower lofted hybrid airborne.
With a faster swing, too much spin can be generated by the fairway and less distance ( or not much more) than the hybrid is common. So you can't really say that one will go further than the other..
I think if you're bridging a gap between 3 wood and 5 iron you need 2 clubs.
If you're not happy with hybrids then a 5 wood @ 18° and a 7 wood @ 21° might work.
If you really only want 1 club then a fairway around 20° will be best. Adjustable ones are handy for this..as an example - the Cally Big Bertha 5 wood can adjust from 17-20° or the 7 wood from 20-23°..gives you a chance to find the right gap.

not sure about that one. I have a ss of 104mph with my 5 wood and it was spinning almost the same as my hybrid. it did launch higher than my hybrid though. perhaps I have a low spinning 3 and 5 wood (rbz with whitboard shaft).

the swap for me was purely down to having a bigger head. certainly inspires more confidence

Puzzled as to why you'd suggest (with a 'perhaps') a 'low profile' one. Again, it's a case of finding 'the right' one. And if a deep-faced suits better (it does for me) then that's the way to go.

As to the club, it's a bit of a toss up between a 5 wood and a 7-wood. The 7 is more likely to be a 'perfect' match for that gap, but that still leaves quite a big one to the 3W. If you are suited to 'taking a bit off' the 3W for a 'non-full' distance, then you could do the same with a 5W while still having the full distance available. 5-Woods are often the easiest Wood to hit - easier than either 3 or 7 in fact - so I'd suggest trying the 5 first. You may find you stop using the 3, at least off the deck! I know severl folk who have done that'!

My 5 wood has made my 3 wood an of the tee only club now. So much easier to hit.

My 7 wood is very easy to hit too but I do tend to only use this as a rescue now and stick with the 5. The only issue now is that my 5 is easy to get out of the rough so I may well be dropping my 7 soon for the lob wedge
