1970s music

I was watching the story of TOTP's 1979 early this morning at about the same time, great memories flooding back listening to Madness, The Jam, Squeeze, The Specials, The Selector, The Ruts and then it was all spoilt when Dame Edna Everage came on singing Waltzing Matilda

Some great background stuff on how it was all filmed in those days and how the Top 30 singles charts were formed and how you got to No1.

Robin, how many copies did you have to sell to get to no1 back then? Probably only about a 1/10th of that number now!

It was supposed to be all cloak & dagger of which shops sent in their sales figures, but, it uncovered last night (this morning) that the shops were known and agents used to send people in to buy 10 singles a time and manipulate the top 10. It was all very basic with hand written sales figures posted back to the Beeb, who controlled it, say no more.....

What has changed is the amount of time songs spend in the charts, back in the 70's you could have a song at number 1 for 6 weeks or more and the songs could have a chart span of 8/10 weeks or more

These days it's instant downloads and most sales are done in the first 2 weeks and the song is out of the charts in 5 weeks

Best thing I remember from the 70's were all the small live music venues that were around... Some fantastic 'original' music to be heard not just tribute stuff which seems the case these days...

The original stuff is on U tube now. You can become an overnight sensation from your bedroom.
In the 70's you had to have a record contract and the managers decided what you performed.

So true there were about 4/ 5 pubs and clubs in most small towns with live music.
I feel sorry for young up and coming musicians with very few venues to learn how to work to live audiences. Back in the 60/70s our band played 6 nights a week and most Sunday afternoons. WINE [booze], WOMAN AND SONG' that why my memories are vague.

I knew a guy who lived in Pinner area in the late 60s/early 70s.

His local often had a young, but balding guy call in and play the (upright) piano with quite a bit of versatility!

My nearest Pub actually has live music 2 or 3 nights a week. The Local residents are trying to get it shut down!
