I understand from a customer I was chatting to this morning about my upcoming week off for golf that the Times are running a story today about some US courses changing there hole size to 15".

I can see the article but not read it online but the opening gambit is about the 5m golfers that stop playing every year as its too hard.

I have done some more searches and is seems the Irish Times are running a story about the 15" hole but more about specific events... http://www.irishtimes.com/sport/golf/15-inch-hole-events-will-help-golf-get-out-of-a-hole-1.1775574

I read else where that TaylorMade are backing this hard.

Not sure I would carry a putter if the hole was that big...

This might sound contradictory but while 15" holes will reduce scores I don't think they really make the game any easier. The "game within the game", putting, will be easier and there will be more chip ins but the hardest aspect is getting the ball onto the green in the first place.

Not for me, I'm afraid!

Now you say that.... There will be chip ins and bounce outs!

The thing is, this isnt really being aimed at those of us who already love and play the game regularly, but to those who dont or who have tried and found it too hard (if you read the report they also talk about a mulligan a hole, throwing it out of a bunker, football golf etc), all aimed at getting more people into the sport in as far as i can see any possible variation of the game.

Personally not a fan, think more shorter courses and slower greens would actually be a better option but I guess there is a feeling that there is a need to do something more radical

I think it's how you balance all that with the "proper" game. If you had, say, "beginners" courses that use this before people move into real golf then maybe but if my course started having regular events like this I wouldn't be playing and would be questioning my membership.

Oooo Ye, slow greens, lets do more of that!!! :)

I understand that there are issues with golfs current setup, but this is just ridiculous. A bigger hole isnt going to help somone who cant get the ball from tee to green and golf is supposed to a challenge otherwise you would get bored of it pretty easy

If this is the direction they want golf to take then you can count me out.. The clubs would be for sale, and the membership money would be put towards something else.. I play golf for the challenge, not to be patronised by people trying to make it easier for me... What next, you may as well just employ someone to throw everyones wayward shots on to the green...

Dont understand this at all. People who find it too hard cant hit the ball straight or even at all. a larger cup wont help...

If they had a few of these comps to get people introduced to golf , does nobody here think they then might get bitten by the bug and play real golf ?,

ala pitch and putt being fun so people step up to par 3 , they like par 3 so take it to real golf ,

Wouldnt say its aimed at serious rubbish golfers such as ourselves

Like Scouser did at Lymm you mean? :D

i have no problem with spin off developments from any sport; many run in parallel for ever.

however, it's not golf - so we shouldn't confuse things.
