got my tickets for the final days play of this year's Open at Royal Birkdale (it's also my birthday that day :D). Already booked a weekend in Lytham for the family, and will be driving from there to the course on the Sunday morning. Can't wait!

Considering it normally takes about an hour from Lytham to Royal Birkdale, what time do peeps think I should set off?

It is a pretty slow road at the best of times so allowing for traffic I'd maybe give yourself a couple of hours. Will you be using a park&ride?

Will be pretty slow I'd imagine as not a great way in.

One option (that I'll be using) is to get a train from Preston round to Southport. From Lytham early morning will take you about 15/20 mins to drive into Preston station.

Yes, got a park & ride pass along with my ticket. To be honest I know it's going to be quite a long day, and as I'm taking my son with, I would rather be there for the finish than getting there early and him deciding he wants to go home when the leaders haven't reached the back 9.

Shouldn't take you too long. Dual carridgeway from Warton to the docks. It's a Sunday so Preston docks should be easy to get round. Follow Marine drive up to the park and ride, which is set up quite well when you do get to Southport. I bet it doesn't take you much longer than an hour to get there unless you are rocking up at dinner time. Aim to get there for when the gates open and you'll be fine.

Good shout from NWJocko about using the train, but if you are going to do that then you might as well just catch it straight from Lytham to Preston and change there.

Bought my tickets for the Friday yesterday. Taking my sister and daughter and booked the park & ride as well. Will be coming up through Liverpool but at 6.30am don't expect much traffic.

Going with Adam to one of the practise days, nice and relaxed and not to busy. Really cant wait to go back to an Open event and have a walk around (last time was 2003 at Royal St George and loved the day out).

Hope you get lucky and its a great finish golf wise with you being there last day. Sorry cant help on timing as don't know the area, but hope you enjoy it.

Be careful which way you come, as some delays over the Runcorn bridge, although should be fine that early.

There is a new link road at the end of the M57/M58 which can save good time going through to Southport (its called Brooms cross road and possibly not on your satnav unless updated in the last year), so you could go around the M57, which would be my advice.

We will be coming up the M53 and using Wallasey tunnel so we should be ok, although there are the ongoing roadworks on A550 Welsh Road on the Wirral. When are the roadworks around Runcorn bridge due to end, they seem to have been going on for years?

This autumn, I believe.

The old bridge will then be closed for 18 months for major refurbishment.

Just been looking this morning and if you use Mersey Rail you can get a daily saver train ticket for £5.10.

For some reason I had it in my head that the golf on Sat and Sunday would finish around 7pm but noticed on the tickets that the first tee times are around 9am and will finish around 3pm. Couple of early morning train rides in!

I've just booked my ticket for the Friday; does anyone have any tips for someone who's never been to watch live golf before?
