Debate being had in the office about an average club golfer playing Tiger at matchplay, off scratch round the amateur's home course. (which is a pretty standard member's parkland course in the UK)

Let's say that average is around 14 handicap. couple of people say that the amateur loses 10 and 8, other camp that the amateur hangs on to lose 7 and 5.

I tend towards the first group, I'd say 70% chance that tiger wins 10 and 8, 30% chance that you get a half and make it to lose 9 and 8.

Other argument is that as the 14 handicapper makes maybe 6 pars in an average round he might halve several holes and hang on longer.

Argument got heated and quite personal, said i'd offer it to the forum to see people's thoughts.... and then say that I was right anyway.

So... thoughts...?

I always remember Peter Alliss saying that the average pro would beat the average amateur with a hockey stick and a rolled up brolley, probably a slight exaggeration but I accept his meaning, the 14 h/cap would be very nervous and would inevitably lose - BADLY. No sure 10&8 tho, he might make a couple of nett pars, my guess nearer 7&5 plus likely to be a couple of 50p bits out of pocket too.

I would side with the 10 and 8 camp maybe 9 and 8 as tigers estimated h/cap is around +6 then even playing off scratch the club golfer is giving away a lot of shots.

I'll say a win for the 14 handicap by default as Tiger wouldn't turn up as the 14 handicap couldn't afford Tigers £3 million appearance money;)

The course will be much shorter than those Tiger plays on tour and he would be able to pick his way around getting the approach in more or less the right position playing well within himself. You would therefore expect a birdie chance on most holes. Assuming only an average day with the putter he will only make a few of these. Doubt if he would make many bogies, again due to the comaparitive short course. So, if your 14 man can make a few pars on the front 9 (maybe 3 or 4) he's got a good chance of most of these being halves so may find himself about 6 down after 9. After than it's looking grim!! Maybe best he could hope for would be a dog licence but more likely 8&7.

Depends how many times the 4 handicapper can par/birdie a shot hole in the first 10, but it'll be a sound thrashing afterall they're not even playing the same game!

tiger would 3 putt every hole as he cant break his in built stroke for lightening quick greens. the 14 handicap would storm to victory. hurray :whoo:

Tiger wouldn't have 100's of people looking for his ball in the rough, although he wouldn't need driver on an average track!
Tiger wins easily maybe not 10&8 though

Ignoring any nerves or intimidation........that Tiger may be feeling ;)

Regardless of how short the course is, it will be unlikely that TW will make 18birdies - so the 14 h'cap will probably get the odd half.

I'll plump for 8&7

A Royal Humping for the 14 handicaper even with his shots this guy is getting done not just from Tiger but from any descent golfer, remember the guy plays of 14 for a reason.

I play off 15, i would beat him.

Get it organised mikeh, i dont mind putting myself out for a mag feature. will even treat him to a kfc after.

tiger is bound to miss the odd putt. he is not going to put every approach inside feet.

both playing off scratch is just silly. of course a thumping would take place.
