It was 12 years ago today that the golfing world lost Payne Stewart in a plane crash.

Not that I was interested in golf at the time but I do remember the flamboyant and colourful man livening up the golf scene.

R.I.P.

I was never his biggest fan at the time, thought he was a bit of a ponce but after reading some stories about him since he appears to have been a real golfing gent. Just a shame I didn't appreciate it at the time.

I remember it well.
I remember having to sit down as I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
A bizarre way to go.....

Always remembered - a Class Act.

I was another who wasn't really a fan and didn't really buy into his choice of clothes (I got it just didn't like it) but he was a mighty fine swinger of a club. No-one deserves to be cut off in their prime and the game did lose a fierce competitor

Same here a true gent, who I remember stuck up for Monty in the Ryder Cup when the US fans were giving him a load of stick. Can't believe it was 12 years ago.

Saw him at Lytham in 1996. Played a shot into 15 from 60 yards, low, hard, the croud all thought he'd thinned it through the back, but it checked up and stopped dead about 4 feet from the hole. Brilliant player, yes he was a character but a nice guy too from all accounts. The game needs a few more like him. Sadly missed.

I remember being so shocked when I heard the news. I think on first appearances many of us thought he was the typical brash American, but his behaviour showed touches of class as evidenced in some of the stories above.

Yes he was a bit exciteable at the Ryder Cup, but I like that - he cared, good on him.

Nice touch from the PGA tour to introduce the Payne Stewart Award, given to players whose own behaviour respects the traditions of the game.

Still sadly missed.

Did the PGA not do a 21-ball salute for him at Pebble a couple of years back for the 10th anniversary - I thought that was a nice touch.
Loved his NFL colours as I was a lad at the time, hated him in Ryder Cups, but as per above grew to respect him once I had read more on him

A great competitor RIP

Never forget it for 2 reasons - one, it was my birthday, and two, that particular birthday was the day I got engaged to my wife after a nice round of golf on holiday at Ilfracombe in Devon.

12 years, eh? I must be due parole soon surely?

(only joking Mrs E if you're a closet GM forum member!)
