Well tomorrow is round one of the summer singles, and I'm giving my opponent a whopping 11 shots. The guy is off 23, but after the winter of coaching and playing is actually knocking it around and comparable scores after fixing the slice that he used to game

I partnered him in a greensomes comp a few weeks back, I think he missed one fairway from 14, not overly long but never on trouble and he's short game isn't bad either.

Got my work cut out lads, pray for me :mmm:

He is off 23 so some part of he's (his) game must be honking:p

You would think, I can't only think from what I've seen the old slice must have really cost him. Now he has that fixed I didn't actually whitness a noticeable weak point so to speak. I honestly think it's now a case of waiting for he's hc to catch up with the qualifiers now running.

Either way let's dance with the devil, will report back!

Take comfort from the fact that a bit back (in foursomes, so the equivalent of a singles match) our opponents had to give us 20 (yes, 20) shots. They still whupped us.

I'm used to it and often giving 12+ shots. Just stick in there and accept you'll lose some holes where he gets a shot BUT believe you are the better golfer :-)

Played in the Jean Wilkinson yesterday which is singles matchplay, handicap bands and no shots - love that :-)

My old club used to have handicap band scratch comps - loved them - though playing a guy who'd gone from 24 to 11 in one season in the final of the high handicap cup was an experience - I did well to keep it to 3 and 2

I gave 19 shots to a guy who was putting for birdies on the first 5 holes- you can't play against that!

Yes he has some terrible holes where he picked up after 8 shots but in matchplay when he's putting for a nett albatross (2 shots on par 5) your heart just sinks

I played my first ever singles matchplay at the weekend against a 5 handicapper so he was giving me 13 shots. I was a bit apprehensive at first as he is a very good player. I was 2 down with 4 to play and knew I would have a good chance if I was in touching distance as I had a shot on the last 3 holes. I managed to take the next 3 holes and then half the last for a 1 up win. I was delighted. I can see where people are coming from giving so many shots away though but then thats the handicap system. Ours was played off full handicap difference, I thought matchplay was always off three quarters?

Three quarters is 4BBB.

Singles used to be but changed (don't know when) years ago as it wasn't really fair.

Threads like this depress me a little. So what you are giving him 11 shots? The theory is you're a better player by 11 shots, so if you turn up and play to the level you know it's more than likely you're going to win. You may even play better than that and absolutely annihilate him! If he turns up it should still be a close match. If he's resolved the problem that you think was causing his handicap to stay a little on the high side then perhaps he'll beat you, but it's by no means guaranteed. I'm willing to wager if you play to or around your handicap it will be a good / close match

Well it's one to the good guys lads,

Started concession, win win for 3 up and didn't look back! Took my foot of the gas mid match and could have lost it but finished two up! My swing went for a walk around 10/11/12 but joined in on 13 for the final stint.

The driver was faultless all day, must have heard about my flirt with the bio cell......... She's a good old girl really ;)
