Right so I'm on the train reading this months mag and I've got to the 100 Greatest Things In Golf section. For the most part I'm nodding sagely with the odd chuckle for good measure. And then I get to the Tarbuckgate esque inclusion. Clean golf shoes! WTF!

Now Mike I know you have a penchant for a spit polished bit of golfing footwear and I clean mine regularly. But I would never in a million years classify it as one of the greatest things in golf. So good people what would you have in it's place?

I'd have donning a new golf outfit that is beautifully colour co-ordinated and looking the part irrespective of ability.

I'd imagine for Papa Smurf it might have something to do with loud trousers. BTW viscount how was the premiere of your new film? Good people the floor is yours...

Haven't got the Mag to hand and I can't remember if this is in but driving through the gates of a top club that you have a Tee-time for still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand......

People who insist on clean golf shoes wind me right up!!!

I simply don't have the time to clean my shoes.

It doesn't make me a bad person walking onto the first tee with dirty shoes!!!

If people want me to have clean shoes then they're more than welcome to come round and clean them for me. :o

So AW would yours be 'someone coming round to my house to clean my shoes'? ;)

Depends who it was. No left wing, fluffy liberals... :) :o

I guess I'll need to start an affair with Homer's missus - she'd clean my clubs and shoes then... :)

Played in Jamaica earlier this year and after the round one of the staff cleaned my shoes for me, i gave him 5 dollars and he asked for more, dirty shoes for me from now on!!

Is your life really that hectic and fast paced? Takes me less than a minute to clean my shoes. Only reason is I want them to last longer.

What difference does it make if a golfer has dirty shoes???

Would you refuse to play with them???

Should they be dragged before the committee and given some form of verbal rebuke???

Makes no difference to me if people I play with dont take any pride in their appearance, I'd play with anyone. Each to their own, I just found it amazing that someone didnt have a spare minute to clean them even if they wanted too.

Like I said I clean them so they last longer and stay waterproof.

Pride in one's appearance - hmmm. Do you clean your wellingtons everytime you've been in the garden???

Do you play golf in the winter months??? I do. I can walk five foot off the 1st tee and my feet look like I've taken part in the battle of the somme. Not much point in cleaning golf shoes.

I'm guessing you steam clean your clubs and then spray them with some form of antibacterial cleaning agent as well.

Plus, do they really last longer???

I've never cleaned a pair of golf shoes in my life.

I've replaced them because the sole has snapped or the spike hole has broken.

Next argument please...

The best thing in golf for me has got to be a weekend in St Andrews, playing the courses then having more than a few beers in the pubs/bars at night.

Theres something about the place that makes me love this game.

But I dont really care about my shoes :p

Im very fortunate in having a wife who takes her appearence
seriously, and mine, one day I was going out of the door with
my shoes in my hand, they were filthy,"you cant wear them"
she said and began to clean them, from that day on theres
never been a problem with dirty shoes..

I think like almost anything, if you look after something it will last you longer. Im not looking for an argument, I was just interested in what you have against clean golf shoe, do you clean your everyday shoes?

Can I add I dont own a steam cleaner nor a pair of wellingtons.

I'm lucky, my everyday shoes are trainers so once they're dirty they get thrown in the washing machine.

If, however, I'm attending a wedding/social gathering then my shoes will be so shiny I could see up your wife's skirt... ;)

You don't own a steam cleaner??? The standards of this forum are dropping! :D

PS - as a foot note - I do not shine my shoes with the intention of using them to look up lady's skirts.

It's just an added bonus... :o
