Ok maybe not that drastic but with the hybrid turning into a hook monster I've recently found myself looking for a temporary option for this distance, but trying to find one with a stiff shaft seems to be next to impossible. What's more if you do find one they are making more money used than some new models.

If I played a regular shaft I could face a little more choice, but clubs with screw fit shafts sucks as amp, 910, rbz etc just seem to be over prices or non existent.

Why has the the 5 wood slide into the doldrums of extinction?

Hybrids -simple as that.
Most players will generally get more distance, accuracy and consistency from a 19/20 degree hybrid than a 19 degree 5 wood.

Why has the the 5 wood slide into the doldrums of extinction?

It hasn't!

But hybrids have certainly 'taken over'.

Older - non adjustable - offerings, Callaway for example, still work really well. Never been a great choice of club for me though.

You could always try a 4W as a substitute for the 3W. Can be more dependable and 'taking a little off' can achieve a 5W type result!

I carry the 5 wood - love it for teeing off on tight holes

Used to carry 1w 4w 7w circa 10 years ago, - worked very well, don't know why I ever changed

Also had a 5w great big Bertha II, which was fabulous off tight lies , eg links courses - you could close the face a bit and hit a low punch that would run for miles and miles out of the wind

With the wet spring and due to a head wind making a couple of our par three's difficult I've just put a 5 wood back into the bag and taken my 19 degree hybrid out. It is longer but I'm finding the greens again and on the fairways it's getting me on the green where the hybrid was leaving me just short.

Played half a dozen holes with just three clubs a couple of weeks ago - was creaming the RBZ stage 2 five wood which wasn't normally in my bag - it's back in now (for the moment).

Best club I've ever had was a Ping Eye (wooden) five wood that I bought second hand and could hit beautifully consistently - used it as my go to club for fifteen years until the face fell apart - still sitting in my locker (though unusable) for sentimental reasons

I tried the lates TM high launch 5 wood , about 215 yards carry on the range with range balls so i have ordered it as i going back to the 5 wood , i had one years ago , it was a Callaway steel plus 11 , great club but both shaft and face are passed its date now , 7 wood was another club , who uses them these days .........................EYG

I carry a 5 wood and 3 hybrid. On paper they should clash a bit but I use my 5 wood for long par 4's and second shots on par 5's and the hybrid for the longer par 3s where I can get it coming in higher and stopping quicker. Happy with both. I don't think the 5 wood is a dead breed just yet

V Steel 5 wood was probably the best club I've ever owned and hit consistently. Should never have sold the damn thing. The Rapture ain't bad but I do miss the Taylormade.

Long live the 5 wood

Currently loving my Srixon Z Star 5 wood, great shaft in it, just put a smooth effortless swing on it and it goes a mile!

I've taken my 3 wood out the bag as I just don't need it (although I technically running 2 3 woods at the mo with the rapture off the tee)
