Is this a true statement or are there any exceptions?

Free drop is always 1 club length - ie staked tree, path, etc
Penalty drop is always 2 club lengths. ie. Unplayable lie, hazard, etc

the way I always remember is if I'm being penalised i.e a penalty stroke added, I get 2 club lengths.
A 'free' drop only 1 club length.

Are there exceptions, sorry no idea but it will be interesting to find out from one of the 'experts'

I can't think of anything that's 1 club length alone - which is an easier way to consider it.

Relief situations are just that; you get relief from interference. You are then permitted to drop within a club length of that established point (subject to various considerations) under some relief situations but not all. However you never get 2 (you don't need them because you have already got your necessary relief, which may have been many club lengths!)

Only rules 26 and 28 include options which include 2 club lengths. i don't think there are any other situations. So the easier statement is that the only time you get the option to drop a ball within 2 clublengths of your balls previous position is when proceeding under rule 28 (unplayable) and within 2 clublengths of any other defined point when proceeding under Rule 26 for a Lateral Water Hazard.

Just to clarify, there may well be other options besides the club length ruling. I was interested in knowing whether the distance ie 1 or 2 club lengths is always the same depending on whether its a free drop (1 club) or penalty (2 club)?

If so it will make it a hell of a lot easier to remember.:)

It's a good guideline similar to the accidental-intentional guide on penaltys.

What is that pbrown?

my poor wording - yes your's and Sawtooth's are easier but they are wrong.

you don't always get 2 club lengths when being penalised eg 25-1b (ii) b.(casual water in bunker and dropping outside bunker)

you don't always get 1 club length for a 'free' drop eg 25-2 (embedded ball)

well that's useful to know, thanks

OK but unless I am mistaken, the examples above don't have any relation to "club length" drops. Is that right?

they highlight that there is no such thing as 'club length drops' as an appropriate generalisation.

as someone else already posted, penalty situations won't involve NPR, and by extension that will mean that if an NPR is involved it will never involve dropping up to a further 2 club lengths (although the ball may roll up to 2 club lengths but that's another matter!)
